CHEVRONT'S MASS MEETINGS. Ths duty of the educated and cul- ' tured to the more unfortunate classes, was the theme of Rev. Graham Tay lor in chapel last Thursday morning. The room was filled with students who had come out to hear this great expon ent of social settlement work and to assist in choosing the student mem bers of the board of management of the college settlement. Rev. Taylor said that the llesure of the cultured class is due to the fact that a large body of people are content ! to do menial labor. It is the duty of every college and university student ' to pay back what he owes to the labor ing class. One of the things that sur prises new students when they begin work among the lower classes is that ' so many of those who have had no opportunity of training the mind are so capable of culture and refinement. There is discontent among the lower classes due to their struggle to coma t out into sunlight of culture. There is also a desire among man' in the up per classes to share the race life. The social settlement work is only the crest of the wave of social conscious ness which is sweeping society. Dr. Taylor covered briefly the his tory of social settlement work since press charges. its enception at Oxford down to the present day. He awelt at length on the work which is being done in the Chicago Commons, an adjunct of the sociological department of the Chicago Theological Institute and of which ne is the head. It was suggested that the Univer sity of Nebraska send one or two students to Chicago to study condi tions in the social settlement there. The meeting was opened by Prof. . fell twnoTf presented '"tot teSj'JiHKT conditions under which the school year opens. The election of student members of the board resulted in the choice of Emil Fouquet. W. J. Hunting, Mar geret Davis and Edith Abbot. Chancellor Andrews was 'introduced and talked briefly on the general fea tures of social settlement work. He directed his attention especially to the influence of Christianity in the solu tion of social problems. Prof. Taylor was then introduced and rwfved a warm ovation. In the evening Rev. Taylor spoke in the First Congregational church. Lincoln Cloak & Suit Co., S. E. Cor. 13th and O Streets. A New Store, and a New Stock of Reliable Goods, well se lected and of the very latest styles.
