W. C. Melford will be in school again
next semester. Meirord is best known
as the captain or the foot ball team of

Professor Maggi of the Nebraska
school, of oratory gave a reception to
his students at Walsh's hall last week.

Professor Nicholson, who has been
granted a year's leave of absence from
the university, spent last Thursday
and Friday with University friends.
He has been sojourning in Colorado
and Avas on his way east, where he ex
pects to spend some time.
The Friday morning musical in the
chapel consisted of a violin solo,
"Scene de Ballet," De Beriot, played by
Miss Shopard; piano selection, "Span
ish Caprice," Moskowski, by Miss
Masse; song, "Meet Me Love, Oh Meet
Me," De Koven, by Miss Hearn.
G. G. Hedgcock and A. A. Hunter
presented an article on the "Red Sea
Weed" in the December number of the
Botanical Gazette. This plant was
discovered about a year ago in Rock
creek, a few miles northeast of Lin
coln. A plate, drawn by Miss Edna
Hyatt, illustrated the article.
Dr. J. L. Goodknight of Covington,
O., visited the university January 13.
Dr. Goodknight was formerly the pres
ident of the University of West Vir
ginia and was the originator of the all
year plun for that institution. He
strongly favors the plan and recom
mends It to the Univorsity or Ne

The Unions had a well attended and
very interesting program last Friday
evening. Original sketches were read
which deserve special mention au
which showed marked ability on the
part of the writers. The program was
closed by a short but interesting de
bate. At the business meeting V.
Peterson and Miss Livesey were re
ceived as new members and the name
of Mr. Duff proposed.
The English club held thoir regular
meeting last Saturday night with Miss
May Hopper in the Y. M. C. A. build
ing. The progrum consisted of miiBic
by Miss Annette Abbott and Miss
Grace Reynolds and a story by Miss
Elsie Blandin. A valuable autograph
letter of the Poet Longfellow was re
ceived, the gift of Dr. Sherman. After
a social good time the club adjourned
to meet in two weeks with Miss Edna
Polk, 1G07 L street.
ATHLETIC BOARD MEETING.
A meeting of the athletic board was
held Monday evening, Juuuary 15. "W.
E. Andreson was elected captain of the
basket ball team and R. W. BUbs was
elected captain of the base ball team
unless M. S. Moore, the regular elected
captain returns. R. D. AndreBon was
chosen captain of the track team. Re
portB from the track, baBket ball and
base ball managers wore read. Track
Manager Clinton reported that a meot
had boon scheduled wJth Iowa, to be
held in Lincoln; also a meot with Kun
sub wJll be held .at Lawrence. Ames
and Drake colleges of Iowa have writ
ten for meets, but no dates have been
scheduled. Basket Ball Manager Hew
itt has secured games with Omaha and
Lincoln Y. M. C. A, teamB and poBBlbly
a game with Kansas -university. Man

planned an eastern trip for the team.
