$830,000 more needed for union’s renovation By Ieva Augstums Assignment Reporter As the price for the Nebraska Union renovation project contin ues to rise, student members of the Union Board voiced their concerns Tuesday regarding the source of additional funds. Daryl Swanson, Nebraska Unions director, said an addi tional $700,000 is needed to complete the removal of asbestos found in the areas that are being renovated. Jess Sweley, a junior biosys tems engineering major, ques tioned how the additional funds would be raised, and asked Swanson if student fees would have to increase more than the proposed increase of an addition al $20 per student, per semester. Swanson said such an increase could be possible. “I’m not going to say it isn’t a possibility, but we really want to avoid it if at all possible,” Swanson said. In addition to the extra $700,000 needed, Swanson said another $70,000 will be needed to finish a handicap-accessible ramp located at a 24-hour entrance on the west side of the building, as well as $60,000 for retrofitting the existing elevator. “We can replace the elevator now, or we can replace it later,” Swanson said. “However, person ally, I don’t think the elevator will last another five years.” Gregg Jablonski, Union Board adviser, said the request for additional funding sources is not included in the Union Board’s annual budget proposal to the Committee for Fees Allocation. “We are worried about this,” Jablonski said. “However, we do believe our funding problem can be solved without increasing stu dent fees.” Swanson said a meeting is being held today to help identify possible funding sources.
