SEATTLE — Three hundred
and sixty four days after a 19-0 loss
to Arizona State, Nebraska
regained its national respect.
A 27-14 upset of second
ranked Washington Saturday pro
pelled the Comhuskers from sev
enth to third in the Associated Press
poll and rekindled thoughts of a run
for a national championship.
“Throughout the whole pre
season and the first two games, we
never doubted ourselves,” NU
defensive tackle Jason Peter said.
“We knew we could get it done.”
Though some did doubt the
Husker power after a 38-24 victory
over Central Florida last week.
Speculation was put aside
Saturday as Nebraska dominated
the line on both sides of the ball.

Jury vindicates
two deputies
in fatal shooting

Two county sheriff’s deputies
were cleared of any wrongdoing by a
Lancaster County grand jury Friday
in the shooting death of a man near
Raymond earlier this month.
The two deputies — Andrew
Miller and Jeff Bliemeister — shot
and killed Bryan Hoover, 23, after he
walked out of his grandfather’s farm
house pointing a rifle at them on Sept.
2. They had been called to the house
after Hoover made suicidal threats to
police.
Seven witnesses and 73 pieces of
evidence were presented to the grand
jury during 1 Vi days of testimony,
said Lancaster County Attorney Gary
Lacey during a news conference
Friday afternoon.
Who those witnesses were, and of
what that evidence consisted, could
not be released, Lacey said.
Lancaster County Sheriff Terry
Wagner released the names of the two
deputies Friday.

Both deputies were placed on
paid administrative leave for five
days after the shooting, but have been
reinstated, Wagner said.
“The deputies involved in this
case did an excellent job,” he said.
“I’m proud of them for the job that
they did.”
Wagner said the deputies used
“professionalism and restraint” dur
ing the incident, which ended when
Hoover would not comply with their
verbal commands.
Separate investigations by the
Sheriff’s Department and the Lincoln
Police Department also cleared the
two deputies of any criminal wrong
doing in the incident, he said.

A cold, light breeze blew past 30
people crowded around a gray stone
bench at dusk Sunday evening. Each
one held a slender white candle to
represent the light that one former
UNL student gave to the world.
Though the breeze blew out some of
the 30 flames, the candle holders
turned to each other to relight the
black wicks.
The memory of Candi Harms, a
freshman who was kidnapped, raped
and murdered in 1992, will live for
ever, they said, because of an S
shaped bench that now sits on the
northwest corner of greenspace at
the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Friends, family and friends of family
gathered to dedicate the memorial -
almost five years after Harms disap
peared.
