“I’ll be very surprised if several
of the films don’t end up being
nominated,” he said.
The independent filmmaker is
starting to become the norm, and
Ladely says it has Hollywood
sweating because of something
other than bright lights.
“The independent film field has
really come into its own over the
last year,” he said, “and we will be
seeing more independent films on
the nomination list than ever be
“It is possible that, in the near
future, we will be seeing more in
dependent films nominated for Os
cars than Hollywood-based films.”
Two films Ladely said he hoped
and expected to see nominated in
clude “Lone Star” (which ran at the
Ross earlier this month) and “Se
crets and Lies” (opening Jan. 23).
Another major event at the Ross
this semester will be the 24th An
nual Student Academy Awards,
April 3 through 6.
“It’s a national competition for
film students,” he said. “We’ll be
the co-coordinators for region two
of the competition, which encom
passes 44 states, including the Dis
trict of Columbia.”
The preliminary winners for
this region are named here, Ladely
said. Tlie winners then move to a
regional competition in Chicago,
and the winners there are judged
in Hollywood by members of the
Academy of Motion Picture Arts
“It’s a lot of fun,” he said.
The general public often sees
past winners of this competition in
mainstream film releases.
“The people who brought us
‘Toy Story’ and ‘Forrest Gump’
won this competition,” Ladely said,
“Spike Lee is also a former com

Ladely also said he was excited
about this year’s UPC International
Film Series that included films
from IsraeL Tunisia and the United
Kingdom this semester.
“We have some really good
films in there.”

the Mary Riepma Ross Rim Theater,
located in the Sheldon Memorial Art
Gallery. An asterik indicates a film
that is part of the University
Program Council International Film Series.
