Huskers lose to Texas Tech
Weekend
Preview
Mel Motley went 3-for-5 with a
home run and Matt Meyer collected
two hits, but the Nebraska baseball
team lost 7-3 to No. 11 Texas Tech on
Thursday afternoon in Tempe, Ariz.
Motley led off the bottom of the
ninth inning with a homer, but Ne
braska could pull no closer. Steve Fish
(1-1) took the loss for 2-2 Nebraska,
which will play sixth-ranked Arizona
State today at 7 p.m. in the Fiesta Bowl
Diamond Classic. Texas Tech im
proved to 7-0.
Wrestlers hit mats
The third-ranked Nebraska wres
tling team will face Northern Iowa at
5 p.m. Saturday at the Bob Devaney
Sports Center indoor track.
The Comhuskers, J3-3-1 after de
feating Missouri on Wednesday night,
have defeated 10 ranked opponents
this season. That does not include
Oklahoma, which Nebraska defeated
Feb. 3. The Huskers later had to for
feit because Mike Eierman was ruled
ineligible.
Nebraska is finished with Big Eight
dual competition. After Northern
Iowa, the Huskers face Wyoming on
Feb. 24. The Big Eight Champion
ships will be held March 9 in Stillwater,
Okla.
Northern Iowa, 4-9, which was
nationally ranked earlier this season,
has defeated James Madison, North
east Missouri, the University of Ne
braska at Omaha and Eastern Illinois
this year. -
NU on home stretch
Partial squads for the Nebraska
men’s and women’s track and field
teams will be in action today at the Bob
Devaney Sports Center indoor track in
the NLAC Invite.
The meet, to which Nebraska
Wesleyan will play host, will begin at
4 p.m. and last until about 10 p.m. This
meet is important to many of
Nebraska’s athletes because it will
decide roster spots for the Big Eight
Championships. This is the last meet
for Nebraska before the Big Eight
Championships, which will be held
Feb. 23-24 at the Devaney Center.
Each Big Eight team is allowed to
enter only 24 men and 24 women in the
conference championships.
Comhusker coach Gary Pepin said
Nebraska had about 17 men and 10
women who were on the bubble enter
ing the Big Eight Championships.
NU heads to Texas
The Nebraska softball .team will
□pen its season today at the Pepsi
Intercollegiate Classic in Arlington,
Texas. The Comhuskers won the tour
nament last season, posting six straight
victories.
Nebraska coach Rhonda Revelle
said she hoped to improve on last
season’s team, which advanced to
NCAA Regional play for the first time
since 1988.
“Our expectations are higher than
last year,” Revelle said. “If we have all
cylinders firing, we’re capable of com
peting at a national championship
level.”
NU tennis in action
After going 1-2 last weekend, the
Nebraska men’s tennis team is back in
the swing of things this weekend.
The Comhuskers will take on Drake
at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Des Moines,
Iowa. Last weekend, Nebraska was
defeated by Texas A&M and South
Alabama, while defeating Baylor.
The Nebraska women’s tennis team
will be in action as well. Today, the
Huskers also will face Drake. On Sat
urday, they will take on Minnesota.

formance last weekend.
Competing in five events, McEwen
won the parallel bars with a 9.625 and
the horizontal bar with a 9.65, scoring
career bests in both events.
Nebraska again will be without true
freshman J.D. Reive, who is suffering
from a back injury. Allen said he was
confident that Reive—whom the coach
has called “this generation’s Jim
Hartung” — would make an impact
when he returned.
“As soon as we get him back in the
lineup, 1 see us shooting up to the top
team in the country,” Allen said.
Another true freshman, Marshall
Nelson, scored a 9.55 on pommel horse
against Oklahoma. Nelsoh, who is re
covering from knee surgery, will com
pete in only the pommel horse again
Sunday.
“He should be back to full speed in
a month,” Allen said. “He could be the
national champ in three events.”

One area that motivates Nebraska
right now is a desire to get in the
NCAA Tournament for the first time
in three seasons. Galligan said the
Huskers believed they would need 20
wins to get in the tournament.
“We just take one game at a time,”
Galligan said. “We’re not putting pres
sure on ourselves, but we just look at
who we’re playing next. We are far
more focused for the game ahead of
us.”
To sweep the Tigers for the sixth
consecutive year, Nebraska must find
all-around title of the year, scoring a
season-high 39.175 points.

Martin, perhaps the best all-around
player in the conference.
The Huskers defeated Missouri 73
68 in overtime on Jan. 19 in Columbia,
Mo. In the first meeting, Martin was
held to 11 points but led the Tigers
with 13 rebounds. In conference games,
Martin leads the Big Eight in both
scoring and rebounding, averaging 21
points and 8.5 rebounds per game.
Martin also leads the Big Eight in
assists, averaging 4.6 per game. But in
the first game, the Huskers countered
Martin with their own scoring attack.
Nebraska junior forward Tina »
McClain led the Huskers with 24
against the Tigers, while sophomore
guard Anna DeForge added 15 points.
