    program to get students involved
By Tonya Cross
Staff Reporter
A new mentoring program puts a
new twist on follow the leader.
Advance Leaders Connecting
With Leaders lets first-year students
interact with mentors to develop lead
ership skills.
“Students are defining the pro
gram,” said Sherrie Helvie, the
program’s graduate adviser.
About 25 new students and about
25 mentors will participate in the
eight-week program. Each new mem
ber .will be paired with a mentor, who
shares his or her interests.
“ft’s really not a seminar,” Hetvie
said. “This is a very interactive pro
gram.”
The first meeting will be Oct. 4 in
the Nebraska Union from 6 p.m. to 8
p.m.
Mick Messman, senior coordinat
ing adviser, said the program’s goal
was to find incoming freshmen who
were not involved in high school and
try to involve them in campus activi
ties.
Weekly speakers will talk about
their lives and the challenges they
have experienced.
The members then will discuss a
different aspect of leadership or in
volvement based on the speaker’s
comments.
Helvie said the emphasis of the
program was to broaden students’
activity levels and set up relation
ships with older students.
The mentors will be selected based
on their previous experiences, said
Marilyn Bugenhagen, director of Stu
dent Involvement.
“If upperclassmen want to get in
volved, we’ll try to find a place or
create an experience for them,”
Bugenhagen said. “We want a mix of
students.
Students interested in participat
ing in the program can pick up an
application at the City Campus Stu
dent Involvement office at 200 Ne
braska Union or at 300 East Campus
Union.
All applications must be com
pleted and returned to the City Cam
pus office by 4 p.m. Monday.
