program to get students involved By Tonya Cross Staff Reporter A new mentoring program puts a new twist on follow the leader. Advance Leaders Connecting With Leaders lets first-year students interact with mentors to develop lead ership skills. “Students are defining the pro gram,” said Sherrie Helvie, the program’s graduate adviser. About 25 new students and about 25 mentors will participate in the eight-week program. Each new mem ber .will be paired with a mentor, who shares his or her interests. “ft’s really not a seminar,” Hetvie said. “This is a very interactive pro gram.” The first meeting will be Oct. 4 in the Nebraska Union from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mick Messman, senior coordinat ing adviser, said the program’s goal was to find incoming freshmen who were not involved in high school and try to involve them in campus activi ties. Weekly speakers will talk about their lives and the challenges they have experienced. The members then will discuss a different aspect of leadership or in volvement based on the speaker’s comments. Helvie said the emphasis of the program was to broaden students’ activity levels and set up relation ships with older students. The mentors will be selected based on their previous experiences, said Marilyn Bugenhagen, director of Stu dent Involvement. “If upperclassmen want to get in volved, we’ll try to find a place or create an experience for them,” Bugenhagen said. “We want a mix of students. Students interested in participat ing in the program can pick up an application at the City Campus Stu dent Involvement office at 200 Ne braska Union or at 300 East Campus Union.
