Hendrix fronts a band with drummer Buddy Miles and bassist Billy Cox. Most of the chemistry of this band comes from the interplay be tween Hendrix and Miles, who also sings and adds his own songs to the playlist. This lineup is much differ ent from the Experience because Miles threatens to take up as much of the limelight as Hendrix. At times, Hendrix seems unsure, how to react to Miles’ presence. The recording begins with “Who Knows,” an unreleased Hendrix composition. It is a field-holler blues with Miles answering Hendrix’s vocals line for line. Not only does Miles compete with the Hendrix vocals, he sings back the Hendrix blues solo note for note. Hendrix moves onto “Machine Gun” after Miles’ filibuster. This performance exchanges the rage and distorted effects of the studio ver sion for the flow funk R&B sound that dominates this album. On two Miles’ compositions, “Changes” and “We Gotta Live Together,” Hendrix takes the back seat. He accents the band with great taste and subtlety, but gone are the days of the transcendental guitar visionary of the Experience. The tone of the entire album seems to be closer to Miles’ musi cal vision than Hendrix’s. The ten sion that Miles and Hendrix exude on stage creates interesting dynam ics, but also awkward moments where the audience is waiting to see which star will come out on top. “Band of Gypsys” is not classic Hendrix, but it is an illuminating look at what could have been. — Jason Giktow Ay-, . y-, , « . , I Aesthetic conference Crash Course in Safety said absolute success How often do you think of your personal safety?
