    Students crave fast food
By Nikelle Kudrna
Sjgff Reporteri
Finding a quality meal for Uni
versity of Ncbraska-Lincoln stu
dents isn’t an adventure — it’s a
job.
Whether it’s between classes, at
lunchtime or Sunday night at a
residence hall, fast food is every
where at UNL. It forces its way into
the cars, bedrooms and classes of
students as they search for food at
a good price.
The search can be perilous, how
ever, so here is a guide to help you
on your way:
Amigos: A favorite for Mexi
can food, this restaurant offers a
condiment selection unparalleled
in Lincoln. Mild and hot sauce,
ranch dressing, hot nacho cheese
and fresh salsa are offered.
Mcxifrics — like taler tots — arc
terrific with ranch dip.
i aco Bell: A favorite for Mexi
can meals, with good tasting food
and low prices. The soft taco su
preme is highly recommended.
Popeye’s: Meals at Popeye’s
consist of meaty pieces of chicken
with a butter-soaked biscuit and a
choice of side dishes. Whether one
decides on the seasoned fries,
mashed potatoes or red beans and
rice, it’s a delicious meal at a rea
sonable price. Unfortunately,
Popeye’s has one drawback — lo
cation. The two outlets in Lincoln
arc located on West O St. and 4Hth
and Vine streets —- both a long
walk for students without a car.
Imperial Palace Express: Con
veniently located in the Nebraska
Union, the Imperial Palace Express
offers Chinese food fast. The cui
sine is good, but more expensive
than other food offered in the union.
Golden Wok: This restaurant
offers Chinese and V ieinanicscdin
ing. u also ranks nigh lor conve
nience—located al27th and Y, it’s
only about a mile from campus.
The Golden Wok also features a
drive thru for motorists and a deliv
ery service in the evenings.
DaVinci’s: The pizza is spicy
with the right balance of sauce and
toppings. Sandwiches are also of
fend, and anything on the menu
can be ordered with confidence.
Little King: Although Little
King offers delicious sandwiches,
their prices are a little steep. Still,
Little King offers some combina
tions not found in any other restau
rant in Lincoln, and they do accept
checks on deliveries.
Subway: For sandwiches, Sub
way gi ves a good deal for the money.
Although this restaurant doesn’t
deliver, it is located close to cam
pus,at 13lh and P streets, and makes
a good pre-movie pit slop.
Runxa: Runza offers high qual
ity, but you pay for it. This can pose
a problem when one is trying to buy
a meal with ihcchangc found in the
cushions of the couch. Still, Runza
oilers hamburgers lhat taslc like
home cooking.
Plump Tomato Pi/.za Co.: Lo
cated in the Reunion, the Plump
Tomato Pizza Co. features cheese
rolls and pizza by the slice. The
pizza is passable, but heavy on the
sauce.
Vending machines: MoslUNL
students will find themselves at a
point in the ir acadcm ic career when
they wilt ha vc back-to-back classes
at lunchtime. Taking into account
the lime it takes to walk between *
buildings, students arc usually left
with two minutes and one choice
— the vending machines.
Judging by selection and atmo
sphere, the areas on the main floors
of Oldlalhcr and Hcnzlik Halls are
the best choices. In addition to the
usual candy, they offer cof
fee,change machines, microwaves
and several tables and chairs for
slops between classes.

Lincoln shopping provides variety
By Sean McCarthy
Staff Reporter
'
Tuition, room and board, parking
and your wardrobe canthrcatcn to kill
astudcnt’sbank account. Fortunately,
Lincoln provides a variety of places to
shop, making blowing your remain
ing $50 less painful.
For the big spender:
The Post & Nickel: Located on
144 N. 14th St., The Post & Nickel
provides some of the most high qual
ity and fashionable clothing in Lin
coln. Carrying brand names like Pcpc
and Guess, shopping here can take a
huge bite out of a student budget —
jeans run an average of $65. '
Most of the lime though, the qual
ity is worth the price. The Post &
Nickel often has sales, so look out for
them. Just don * t expect m uch for your
$10.
Shqnmgg.
Lawlors: Located in the Gateway
Shopping Center,61000 St., Lawlors
stocks some of the best sportswear in
Lincoln. There arc sports shoes for
every occasion — baseball, basket
ball, tennis, basketball, golf and bad
minton — but the costs of the shoes
are high.
Once again, quality is Lawlors
chief selling point A great variety of
winter wear, ski equipment and all
around sporting wear make Lawlors
one of die best sports stores in Lin
coln. Like the Post & Nickel, don’t
I expect much from your S10.
If you don’t want to blow an entire
paycheck on clothes, but still want
want something good to wear, the
following stores offer clothes that arc
mostly causal. The best bargains:
Dillards and Younkers: Both arc
located in Gateway Shopping Center,
and havea variety of men and women’s
casual wear. There arc usually deals if
you look for them. The stores can be
busy on the weekends when most of
their sales occur.
1 Both Dillards and Younkers offer
> the same quality as the Post & Nickel,
but slightly lower prices gives Dillards
f and Younkers the edge. The two stores
arc also connected to each other,
making shopping there less of a pain.
Nebraska Spirit: Located on 1120
P Sl, Nebraska Spirit is basically
divided into two stores. One half of
the store is dedicated to UNL sporting
wear. Nearly every tank top, stocking
and sweatshirt features a team from
Nebraska.
The other half of the store features
clothing, drinking glasses, key chains
hats and outer apparel for fraternities
and sororities. Nebraska Spirit has an
embroidery shop that will embroider
Greek letters on basically any cloth
ing.
Nebraska Bookstore: Located at
13th and Q streets, Nebraska Book
store offers a bigger extension of
Nebraska Spirit, minus the Greek sec
tion. Nebraska Bookstore has UNL
designs in abundance for male and
female sporting and casual wear. It
also features a variety of offbeat shirts
that you can’t find in most other stores
in Lincoln.
The County Seat: Located in the
Gateway Shopping Center, the County
Seal is less expensive than the Post &
Nickel, but doesn’t carry the variety
of the Post & Nickel. But, the County
Scat is still a good place to find a
bargain on clothing.
Financial disaster will usually come
to a student some lime during his or
her career at UNL. During these limes,
you can turn to the budget stores.
Most offer clothing that looks like an
early throwback oflhc 1980s. In most
of these stores though, you can find a
good outfit for practically nothing.
The budget crowd: The four best
places to buy a wardrobe for under
550.
TJMaxx: Located on 400 N.48lh
St., TJ Maxx is a hidden gem. There
David Badders/DN
arc aisles of clothes that arc drasti
cally reduced and there is usually a
good pair of jeans or a good shirt
within a pile of outdated clothes.
The Goodwill and Salvation
Army: Don’tcxpcct miracles at these
places, but don ’ t rule them out. There ’ s
usually a SI 25 Polo shirt, a $75 Gucci
purse or a $300 business suit wailing
to be sold for around SIO. Like TJ
Max x, you do more than your share of
probing, but the rewards arc well worth
the labor.
Wal-Mart: Recently opened, Wal
Mart, located on 4700 N. 27 St., has
literally acres of shopping land to
look through. Wal-Mart may not be
the best place to shop for clothes, it is
a good place to pick up a microwave
or toaster at a good price.
If you arc interested in shopping
for items besides clothes and you
want to slay close to campus, there are
many stores downtown such as the
Centrum Mall that will meet your
needs.
The Centrum: Located on 1 llh
and Q streets, the Centrum is looking
to make a comeback. About a year
ago, the Centrum was basically a va
cant building. Now, under new own
ership, it is 70 to 75 percent occupied.
The Centrum now has 22 stores
featuring antique shops, jewelry stores
and a Country Western bar — the
Cactus Club.
