Tyler Continued from Page 6 the present. “ICan Take You Higher,”isan up tempo song reminiscent of her first LP. “The Sound Of Thunder” is an excellent song. It opens with Chuck Findley playing the trumpet before Collins interjects her vocals. With the interplay of these two going back and forth, it makes for one of the better tracks on “Tyler.” “Freedom” is a tune that has the guitar sound that will remind the listener of EnVogue’s “Free Your Mind.” This song talks about the prob lems of the world — pulling and working together. The appeal to this song is the sample from Dr. Marlin Luther King Jr. at the end. Collins, of course, shows she can slow it down. “I’ve Never Really Known Love,” is the last song on “Tyler” and Collins uses the acoustic guitar to set the mood for this song that helps “Tyler” end on a positive note. “Jyler” shows great diversity and style. Collins is able to put together several different sty les and make them work for her. Collins will remind the listener a lot of Jody Watley, but Collins might be a stronger singer than Watley. Collins also wrote and co-wrote five songs on “Tyler,” and this lets the listener get more of the real Tyler Collins. The real Collins was influ enced by some of the ’70s greats like Stevie Wonder, who happens to be her cousin, and Curtis Mayfield. Overall, “Tyler” is an enjoyable LP. Collins has put together 11 songs that will show the listener that she possesses musical depth and integrity that will earmark Collins as a multifacitcd entertainer with talent that can endure over time. * — Anthony D. Speights Film sheds light on Oglala shoot-out By Lisa Newberg Staff Reporteri__ Retracing indistinct tracks that were left bchindl6 years ago, the FBI attempts to sweep away the dust that hides the truth in the film “Incident at Oglala” (Ross, 12th and P streets). The film is about Leonard Peltier, a Native American con victed of killing two FBI agents and another Native American in a shoot-out on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Reservation in June 1975. . Peltier is serving his 16th year behind bars and is not expected to be released until the year 2035, if ever at all. After several appeals of injustice raised againstgovemment authorities, Peltier’s attorneys have not yet given up. The controversy of the film fo cuses on whether the verdict against Peltier is accurate or if the ordeal is a case of injustice. The film agrees with the latter and is on an obses sive quest to bring about fairness and equity throughout our nation. Michael Aptcd, director of “In cident at Oglala,” brings together the Lakota Sioux, prosecuting and defensive attorneys, Peltier and other eyewitnesses to document both sides of the case. The film attempts to reveal the actual events of the incident, gives viewers a chance to focus on Peltier’s perspective and sheds new light in defense of the Native Ameri cans. Robert Redford narrates and di rects “Incident at Oglala,’’ which will play Thursday through Sunday at the University of Nebraska Lincoln’s Mary Riepma Ross The ater in the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery.
