Have you found that to be true? M: We have problems related to our cultural differences. Not more problems, just somewhat different. C: Actually, 1 think it has helped, being from different cultures. You .. don’t assume as much, or take as much for granted. I feel that some times it helps us when we have a disagreement or problem because we are always cautious that it might just be a cultural difference. Div: Describe the character of the other. . . . Do you think people from her/his cultural milieu see her/him the same way as you do? M: Happy, intelligent, easy go ing... I don’t think anyone sees her the way I do because otherwise they would be in love with her, too. O Moises is intelligent, witty, intense, kind and generous. It is hard for me to know how his fellow Colombianswouldviewhim.Ithink my view of him is unique because of the nature of our relationship. Dlv: In the U.S., Chris is more adept at communication with others. How will a move to Latin America change the context of your relationship? M: It will change some of the dynamics but not the essentials. C: When we were in Venezuela, it was kind of frustrating for me that I had to communicate through Moises. Obviously 1 would have to go through a period of adjustment in which I would be dependent on him in a way that I am not accus tomed to, but it would be tempo rary and not really affect the basic aspects of the relationship. Div: Is love truly a “universal language” or do your cultures affect the way you express it? M: There are some culturally linked rituals and different ways to ■» --—— . J manifest love, but if we h^ve the ability to translate that culturally specific language then there is a universal language. C: Yes, culture affects the ways in which love is expressed — it is manifested through different cus toms, rituals and sayings. These things, however, are easily trans lated, although sometimes it can be a little disconcerting. For example, the word for fat (Gordita) is a term of endearment in Spanish, which may not sit to well with the average American woman. Div: How have you adjusted to gender role differences in one another’s culture? M: We haven’t, but we are work ing on it. C: This is an area in which our cultures are very different. We are working on understanding those differences and how they might affect us. Essentially, though, Moises and I see eye to eye in that we both believe in equality within the rela tionship. Moises iscomfortable with my feminism and I don’t feel he expects me to be anything other that what I am. ■ -9 ! Crowd City consists of pearls of flattened platoons in a filet of standing grapefruit trees. The grapefruit often goesii nda maged. The visual ejaculation is quite disturbing and has drawn a low tide of auras from the pulpit, de scending from the afflicted fathers. Nobility as yet have not repro duced from the City ejaculate — though, Mark, they have tried. Perfectionists have claimed the city has retinitis, but despite ex tensive temperature taking, this remains unsubstantiated.
