(Well-performed Crystal Gayle concert interesting change for the Lied Center By Michael Deeds Senior Editor Crystal Gayle is one of those per formers who is just so nice and per sonal onstage that it just doesn’t seem fair that one person could be so much. The voice, the hair, the huge selec tion of hits, the friendly charisma — the only thing Gayle left home was her kids. She even brought her sister, Peggy Sue Wright, to sing backup vocals at the Lied Center for Per forming Arts Saturday night. Alter a brief introduction by her live-piece band, River Road, Guyle walked onstage gracefully, followed by that incredible ankle-length hair and fluid voice. Never one to get stuck in a musical rut, Gayle drew from her surprisingly huge bag of hits encompassing all sorts of musical styles. The more she sang, the more a person realized how many smash songs she has had. “Talkin’ In Your Sleep,” “Ready For the Times to Get Better,” “Half the Way,” “It’s Like We Never Said Goodbye,” and the list goes on. Gayle sang them all with a down-to-earth passion that kept the crowd convinced of her honesty. But it was Gayle who made the evening special, and the crowd erupted f°r Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue,” her biggie. But Gayle didn’t finish with that, choosing instead to d° a rollicking version of ‘‘Rocky Top,’ followed by a slow encore, “He Is Beautiful To Me.” The nearly two-hour show was an interesting change for the Lied Cen ter, and a well-planned one, to be sure. Gayle’s universal appeal and girl-next-door charm was received well by the older crowd. It’s hard to imagine Gayle ever giving a bad performance, and Satur day night ’s was definitely a good one. Gayle, who experienced some minor throat irritation earlier in the week, had no problem filling the Lied Center with a cool, cutting vocal style that seems miles from her sister, Loretta Lynn. But like Lynn, Gayle has a distinctive sound, and the subtle cry | she injects into her love tunes sets her i apart. The slick delivery allows her to j snag the pop audience, while the music and themes often draw a country crowd. Gayle broke up the barrage of g ballads with occasional upbeat hits 1 like “Why Have You Left the One < You Left Me For,” which got the l near-capacity crowd clapping. And she changed pace by doing her soap opera theme, “Another World” with bassist Jim Ferguson. The duo also did a perfect rendition of “You and I,” her hit with Eddie Rabbitt. Gayle stepped out of the spotlight | quite often, allowing her sister Peggy Sue to sing a couple of her tunes, I followed, of course, by some silly country humor. The two did a safe medley of some Evcrly Brothers songs, adding to the musical diversity. And multi-instrumentalist Jay Patten did one of his saxophone songs, which was downright impressive. -- r — — i I I L 20% off 1 s, all T-Shirts -£ ■j JFREE Racquet string tension .E ” testing ts S /Best selection of racquets for *1 s tennis and racquctball from ® l $19.95 and up S ^Accessories: gloves, bags, hats, § s Thor-lo socks g | VGreat gift ideas ^Shocs (K-Swiss, Head Wilson) g i !
