But Knutzen has done a lot more in the few short weeks the store has been open besides just sell his own crea tions. He has jewelry for sale on consignment, as well as furniture and other artwork. He said that last week his store had already completed goals they set for the month of August. “I want to associate clothing with music, furniture and accessories,” he said. Besides housing other artists’ work, Knutzcn has promised change in his store every month, including a differ ent featured artist every month as well as a different look to the store. Knutzcn said the atmosphere and look to the store arc simple now but “as we grow it’s going to change,” he said. The target crowd for Originals is high school and college students that have “very individualized tastes,” Knutzen said. He also said he consid ered a lot of his things lobe “far in,” meaning hip and with the times. Knutzcn stressed the point that even though he owns a clothing store he is an artist first But he said he needs some sort of a head for business -- otherwise, he could be taken advan | tage of in the business world. Knutzcn is definitely an artist that I likes to sell his work. “If you’re positive enough about it, others should see it loo,” he said. ♦ART ORAFTING SUPPLIES* ♦ 20 %- 50% OFF l $ W PEN SETS * PENCILS * MARKERS 4 ▲ OILS * ACRYLICS * WATERCOLORS i PADS * CANVAS * TABLES & MORE ▼ ^ Yearlong student/faculty discounts J $1320 P Slreef pat ash inc 474-4415$ I Complete I 1 Contact Lens Service | Including soft daily and extended wear, gas B permeable, bifocal, astigmatism correcting, M medical and cosmetic contact lenses. Designer’s show not typical for Lincoln Fashions unique, but not unwearable By Jennifer Johnson Staff Reporter Picture the typical Lincoln fashion show - an impromptu stage set up in front of Montgomery Wards at Gate way. Metal folding chairs, roped off by a velvet cord, surround the stage. Weary mall-goers sit on the chairs, thankful for the time off their feet. Lincoln designer Duran Knutzen’s show at The Bistro on Sunday was NOT the typical Lincoln fashion show. Knulzcn’s show, featuring his Win tcr/Holiday collection, was an ele gant event enjoyed by a mixed crowd. While wine, cheese and fruit was served to the audience, models moved between the tables - sometimes danc ing, sometimes gliding, but always creating a mood and reflecting an attitude that matched the clothing they modeled. The clothing suited a wide range of tastes, utilizing scvctal fabrics. Garments were cut in shapes to flatter many different body types. Knutzen’s designs included both day and evening wear, but his u:.c of texture was particularly significant in every piece. In our ready-to-wear world of cloth Tastuop-yJ ing, day wear in fabrics other than cotton and knits is sometimes diffi cult to find. But Knutzen’s use of fabrics such as chiffon, velvet, lamfc and organza, mixed with more basic fabrics, created dimension and inter est All pieces from the show will beat Knutzen’s store, Originals, 822 S. 48th St, for the next week. Shopping at a designer’s own boutique is a unique experience in Lincoln. In large fashion centers of the country, such as New York City and Los Angeles, whole areas arc dedi cated to boutiques for young, experi mental designers. Such a ease is rare in the Midwest. To see clothing that is designed and created by a local designer can give one the whole shopping experi ence. A smaller, designer-run boutique allows shoppers’ questions to be an swered and more emotion in clothing selection to be created, as opposed to a department store, where clothing is mass-displayed on chroinc-platcd racks. Knutzen’s clothing is unique, but not so eccentric as to be unwcarablc. One does not need to be a model to wear his designs. His models, primar ily students, seemed very comfort able in his clothing. For something new and unique, check out Knutzen’s designs. Santa Continued from Page 11 wallows in it, and wants us to as well. After a while, it gets to be a bit much. But its utter tastclcssncss isn’t “Santa Sangre’s” only problem. In his never-aiding attempts at stark realism, Jodorowsky’s direction appears heavy-handed, panicularly in the early going. Characters arc given little to do but pose for one bizarre shot after another. Fenix’s intense maternal fixa tion has caused some to compare “Santa Sangre” with Hitchcock’s “Psycho,” but this film is little more than offensive self-indulgence on Jodorowsky’spart. If he wanted so badly to hypnotize audiences, he should have at least done us all the courtesy of having something worth saying.
