Shirley Boyle of Lincoln etches a wooden saw in her home workshop. The saw will be etched
with the buyer’s name and used as a door sign. Boyle has practiced wood etching for ten years.
ractory otters heritage, craft demonstrations
By Chris Schneider
Staff Reporter
From old-fashioned doll-making
to tales of Indian lore, a wide variety
of heritage and craft demonstrations
will be offered on Friday in the Candy
Factory at 8lh and P streets.
Anything can be expected, as people
from around Nebraska bring their
unique jobs and hobbies to Summer
time Nebraska from 4 to 8 p.m. In
fact, many of the demonstrators de
scribed their fortes as “a lost art.”
“In the 1800s, wood burning used
to be the art of women,” Shirley
Boyle, one of the demonstrators at the
show, said. “Now it is a lost art.”
Many of the crafts that will be
/. ..
displayed are made similar to the way
they were done a century or more
ago, some right there at the show.
Boyle, of Lincoln, will be showing
her wood artwork with country scenes
burned into them. Toys, wall hang
ings and souvenir items will be among
the artwork she will sell. She also will
demonstrate how she does her work
at random times during the day.
Basket weaving will be demon
strated by Julie Doster, also of Lin
coln. She will show a wide array of
baskets with different weaving styles,
from Easter to ribbed baskets. In
addition, she will be weaving during
the show.
Chair caning will be done by Merle
Breunsbach of Wymorc. Caning in
volves weaving cane 10 form the seals
and backs of chairs, leaving octago
nal patterns. Breunsbach also will be
demonstrating his craft on his own
chairs.
David Grantski of Beaver Cross
ing will offer a different kind demon
stration. He will tell stories of Indian
lore and Indian conservation. His booth
will include a teepee and several ani
mal pelts, helping him describe how
the Indians used every part of the
game they hunted.
Other heritage and craft demon
strations will include handmade dolls
by Pat Robely, gun making by Jim
Sahs and a quilt display by the Lin
coln Quillcrs Guild.
