pieces for the upcoming perform
ance of “Gendcralities.”
"Gendcralities,” a program in
which performers will lake an in
depth look at gender myths, is one
of many opportunities students
involved in the department will
have to perform throughout the
year, Milan said.
Other opportunities for per
formances include working with
the Lincoln City Ballet Company
and Ballet Midwest, two Lincoln
based ballet companies affiliated
with UNL, and Orchesis, a group of
students who are interested in
dance and perform shows yearly.
Milan said she finds peoples’
notions that dance is easy and sepa
rate from academics “very frustrat
ing." Trade Houser, a 21-year-old
junior dance major from Ontario,
Canada, shares Milan’s views.
“You can’t be a good dancer
without a functioning brain,”
Houser said. “Maybe book-related
homework is more ‘heavy,’ but we
pul in as many hours as anyone."
“Genderalities," Milan said, is “a
special event intended to introduce
people to modern dance, and show
them how ridiculous gender myths
are.” Titles of pieces to be per
formed during the show will give
people a hint of their content, she
said. As examples, she mentioned
“Cocktails," a piece that will be
performed by jnen in the theater
department, and “Women in
White” and “Fragile Facade,” both
of which to be performed by
women in the dance department.
The program will be performed
Nov. 11 and 12 at 8 p.m. in the
Studio Theater on the third floor of
the Temple building on 12th and R
streets. General Admission is $4.

The University of Nebraska-Lin
coln theater department has a lot to
offer to both undergraduate and
graduate students, and is as carccr
oriented as any other college on
UNL’s campus, said Jan Stauffer,
undergraduate advisor for the UNL
Uteatcr Department.
Staulfcr said the programs stu
dents must complete to acquire a
bachelors, masters, or doctorate
degree are challenging, but such
work well prepares them to com
pete for work outside of a univer
sity environment.
As part of the College of Arts and
Sciences, she said, the theater de
partment requires students en
rolled in the program to fulfill the
same basic requirements as must
other students in the college. These
requirements include taking
classes in areas such as English,
math, science and foreign lan
guage
While taking these classes,
Stauffer said, students take classes
in acting, directing, stage make-up,
