Six University of Nebraska-Lincoln 4-H
members, recently elected as national officers,
are hoping to increase club membership nation
ally.
Delegates from 37 other clubs throughout
the United States elected the slate of UNL
candidates last Sunday at the national confer
ence of the National Collegiate 4-H Organiza
tion.
Newly elected president Steve Nelson, a
mechanized agricultural senior, said he and
other candidates gave a presentation at the
conference explaining their goals and aspira
tions for the club.
Don Sittering, adviser to u nl s 4-h cnap
ler, said that as president of the National Colle
giate 4-H Organization, Nelson will be respon
sible for giving administrative leadership to
more than 50 different clubs on campuses
across the country and coordinating regional
activities.
Nelson said the new officers will revise the
4-H organization on the national level. He said
he hopes to collaborate more with the national
adviser, Steve Mullen, who works with thcU.S.
Department of Agriculture in Washington,
D.C., to start the changes.^
Some of Nelson’s goals for the future of 4
H are to gain more emphasis on its national
service project, which is child-abuse proven
4-H offices
tion, and more publicity locally and nationally |
of the organizations. Nelson also plans to de
velop an alumni group for the organization.
The Lincoln chapter of 4-H will attend the
national conference next fall in Washington,
D.C., and the national congress in Chicago in
November, Nelson said. The club will sponsor
workshops dealing with leadership and public
ity of the 4-H organization at the convention.
Siffering said the new officers will be re- '
sponsible for planning the 15th annual national I
convention, which will be in Washington, I
D.C., the first time in April 1989. He said the i
first National Collegiate 4-H Conference was
in Nebraska in 1973.
Siffering said Nebraska presented a slate of 1
officers at the conference evaluation and plan- i
ning session in October at Brookings, S.D. The 1
slate was approved at the session and then
presented for election at the national confer
ence in Brookings last Thursday through Satur- i
day, he said. j
UNL 4-H members elected at the confer
ence were Nelson; Business Manager Darin j
Hubbard, junior electrical engineering major, 1
Secretary Robm Sawyer, junior English and .
speech communication major; Publicity Direc
tor Milch Mason, freshman agricultural eco- .
nomics major; and Steering Committee Coor
dinator Loren Isom, sophomore agriculture
business major. '
Sawyer will also be editor of the
organization’s newsletter. !
