before Los Angeles’ Grave Line tours
adds Divine’s motel room to Sharon
Tate’s flagstoned porch, John
Belushi’s bungalow and Marilyn
Monroe’s house on Fifth Helena
Drive.
In true Hollywood fashion, the
books will start popping out. Within a
year, one of John Holmes’ close
friends will probably write an account
of “Johnny Wadd’s” life. Yet another
Los Angeles coroner will include ihe
“true facts” behind the deaths in a
nonfiction paperback like Thomas
Noguchi’s “Coroner.”
“Hollywood Babylon III” will
perhaps feature the 300-pound Divine
eating poodle pics on a future cover.
Phil Donahue will no doubt run a
show on people convinced of the
symbolism of celebrities always
dying in threes.
Once again, the other deaths — no
one seems to remember just whose
they were — that followed Elvis and
Fred Astaire’s demises will be ex
humed. Someone will phone in to
announce that “Charlie’s Angels”
died after three Farrah Fawcett re
placements. Dil lerent causes of death
will be tossed around, especially
since we’ve yet to find out the official
causes for Divine’s and Gibb’s
deaths.
It will go on and on. Someday
Divine posters will probably crowd
out Marilyn Monroe and James Dean
merchandise in poster stores. And
finally, “Andy Gibb’s Greatest Hits”
will turn up on late-night television
spots in special collector’s editions
not available in retail stores.
Yes, the Ides of March have come.
Let the merchandise circus begin.

Hoped-for glory up to Academy whims

Boorman, who directed and pro
duced the film, deserves the nomina
tion for Best Picture. As a peer, only
“The Last Emperor” really tries to
•make this sweep of history. “Moon
struck” and “Broadcast News” are
nice comedies. But if the Academy’s
whims go for grander subjects,
“Hope and Glory” stands a very good
chance of winning.
Phillipc Roussclot’s cinematog
raphy also stands well in its Oscar
category, comparing favorably with
both “The Last Emperor” and
“Empire of the Sun.” Again, its
chances depend on whether the
Academy likes its low-key beauty or
the flash and hcroicsof Spielberg and
cinematographer Allen Daviau.
That’s the basic difference, the
dividing line between American and
British hlms in general: Hash and
grandeur vs. the quieter, smaller and
ultimately more meaningful.
“Hope and Glory is showing
through Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the
Joyo, 6102 Havelock. The Joyo
charges S1.75 for students with ID. It
has a nostalgic atmosphere, but the
sound system is not as good as those
at most of the bigger theaters and the
prints they show seem to have more
cuts, scratches and dirt.
