Husker men’s swimmers fight false starts for Big 8 lead By 1 im Hartmann Senior Reporter Despite losing freshman Peter Williams to a disqualification for a false start in the 50-yard freestyle, the Nebraska men’s swimming team still took an early lead in the Big Eight Swimming Championships. The Comhuskers finished Thurs day night’s action at the Bob Dcva ney Sports Center with 159 points. Kansas is second with 155 points, followed by Iowa State with 109 and Missouri with 23. Kansas took the lead in the women’s portion with a score of 198 points, followed by Nebraska’s 176. Iowa State was third with 109 points, while Missouri finished with 75. The meet will continue today and tomorrow, with preliminary events being held at 11:00 a.m. and finals at 7:00 p.m. both days. Nebraska men’s coach Cal Bentz said he was pleased with the way his team performed, especially after losing Williams. Williams was ex pected to challenge Iowa State All America selection Eric Hansen for first place in the 50 freestyle. The Nebraska women were also hurt by a false start disqualification. The Huskers’ 800 freestyle relay was disqualified when the fourth swim mer, Lee Pennefather, left the blocks too early. At the time, the Huskers were in second place. Nebraska women’s coach Ray Huppertsaid the disqualification will hurt the Huskers, but he thinks they can overcome it. “We’re right there,” he said. “We just need to crack the shell and not make some mistakes.” Mike Irvin led the Nebraska men with a meet record 1:50.26 clocking in the 200 individual medley. Ryan Bell and Jaco Kruger finished first and second, respectively, in the 500 freestyle. Huppert said that the women were helped by Mindy Matheny and by the performance of the divers. Matheny won the 50 freestyle and teamed with UCanna WllDUUin, Clin nunc;, auu Allison Barker to win the 200 medley relay. In the three-meter diving compe tition Stephanie Clennan finished first and Amy Aarsen finished second to boost Nebraska. Both posted NCAA qualifying scores. Bent/ said that he feels confident that the Huskers will perform well tonight and tomorrow, especially after Rick Havekost finished second in the 50 freestyle after Williams’ disqualification. Beck hopes ‘greed’ will help NU win tournament title By Tim Hartmann Senior Reporter Nebraska women’s basketball coach Angela Beck wants her team to be greedy. Beck, who coached Nebraska to its first Big Eight title last Saturday, said she doesn’t want the Comhuskers to be satisfied with their conference rings. She said she wants them to add the conference’s postseason tourna ment title to their list of accomplish ments this season. The Big Eight Tournament will be Saturday through Monday at the Bicentennial Center in Salina, Kan. Beck said a victory in the champi onship game of the tournament would be special because no Big Eight team has ever captured the conference’s regular season and postseason titles in the same year. She said she will use that as a motivational factor when Nebraska faces Kansas State Satur day at 2 p.m. in the tournament’s first round. “We were blessed with winning the Big Eight, and now we’ve got to try to go in there and win both,” Beck said. “I’m going to do everything I can do to get us hungry.” Kansas State coach Matilda Moss man, who watched the Wildcats drop 82-72 and 66-60 decisions to Ne braska earlier this season, said her squad has improved even though it has an 8-19 record overall and a 1-13 mark in the Big Eight. “We’ve only won one conference game, but we’ve shown improve ment,” Mossman said. “We need to play with more consistency, though.” Mossman said Kansas State is a good team when it takes high-pcr ccntagc shots. She said the Wildcats have to shoot better than their oppo nents if they’re to be successful. “Unfortunately, we haven’t shot better than our opponents very of ten,” Mossman said. Mossman said Kansas State’s leading scorer, forward Janet Mad sen, will not play against the Huskers. Madsen, who averages 12 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, suffered a hyperextended knee against Kansas earlier this season. She said center Kristie Bahner, who has been side lined by mononucleosis, probabl) will play. Beck said defense will be the kc> to the game. She said she wants the Huskers to play pressure defense which will force opponents tocommil several turnovers. “I’d like to present that kind ol team at the Big Eight Champion ships,” she said. “I think if wccan play a great defensive game and try to use our bench properly, we have a great chance of winning another champi onship.” Beck said the difference between this season’s team and last year’s squad, which dropped a 74-73 deci sion to Kansas in the tournament’s second round, is depth. “The reason we lost last year was that we didn’t have a bench,” Beck said. “No doubt about it. I could not give anybody a breather. If I was ever going to use my bench, I’ve got to use it down there.” FOR SALE 1986 Bianci Broadway 10 speed, blue/gray. almost new. $150. Call 475-5201.
