Discover that fake, throbbing L.A. glamour LA. from Page 9 type? Cement is certainly more permanent. No visit to Hollywood would be complete without stopping at Frederick s of Hollywood, the renowned lingerie capital of the world. Check out their new “bra museum,” a tribute to the torpedo bras and garter belts of yesteryear. But don’t bother with ^rashy Lingerie, another Tinseltown un die shop that purportedly requires a paid membership and a famous name in order to enter its golden gates. So you have to be rich and famous just to buy panties in Hol lywood? Also visit Mann’s Chinese Theatre, where yesterday’s super stars left their imprints. On the sidewalk in front of Mann ’ s, you ’ II see everything from Jimmy Durante’s nose imprint to Natalie Wood’s footprints. Before you leave the Glamour City stroll down trendier-than thou Melrose Avenue, L.A.’s wa tered-down version of New York ’s Greenwich Village and London’s Kings Road. Here you’ll find shops like Wacko, a novelty haven that sells wind-up plastic sushi. And there’s Retail Slut, a punky little boutique that specializes in patent leather garb. The most in teresting store is Drake s, Hollywood’s glamourized version of the porno bookstore. The iront of the store sustained a huge crack after one of L.A.’s many earth quakes, so the owners decided to leave it and decorate its jagged edges with mint-green neon lights. But the inside of this art-deco smut shop is the most intriguing. No sticky floors and raincoated per verts here — just lots of piush carpeting, potted plants and pom. I f you want to catch a glim pse of the Hollywood sign, be wise and do so before sundown because recently they haven t been lighting itupatnight. If you arc outat night, drive up through the Hollywood Hills to Blue lay Way, a mountain top situated around rows of ritzy suburban nouses. The Beatles wrote a song about this lookout point’s spectacular view of the city. On the drive down, keep an eye out tor me nouse wncicouai um i Tate was slaughtered by the Man son loons. Since it is adjacent to Holly wood, drive over to Beverly Hills and roll down Rodeo Drive and leer at shops with merchandise that costs more than your annual in come. If you crave night life, L.A. ooasts some of the best in the world. Grab a copy of The L.A. Weekly and consult its listings of the hip places to go. Being trendy is what L.A. is all about, so don’t dissent and seek out the iess-trav eled clubs. The first thing you’ll notice is L.A.’s unique “oortable club scene.” Bars have a different theme, crowd and name every night. One night a place will be called “Holistic Napalm,” featur ing New Age music and decor; the See LA. on 11 3 5 ) 3 j j J «) ? v v v v ^ 9 v v V* >9 v y V V v v v v v v y y y y v V ^ v w 5 Turn Extra Time Into Extra Cash $ ^ Earn $115 your first month plus bonus cash do- $ I $ natlng plasma It s safe and easy Read, relax or $ ; $ study while giving the gift of life.
