Honors program open to top students
From Staff Reports
Students with proven ability
and a distinguished academic rec
ord may apply for the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln honors pro
gram.
Patrice Berger, associate pro
fessor of history and director of the
University Honors Program, said
students with 45 credit hours or less
at the end of this semester and a
proven academic record may apply
for the program.
Honors program students are
usually incoming high school sen
iors with a composite ACT score of
29 or above, Berger said. However,
some sophomores were admitted
to the program last year.
Berger said he has sent letters to
prospective applicants, but stu
dents who did not score high on the
ACT, but have an appropriate
grade point average also are en
couraged to apply for the program.
Students admitted to the pro
gram are given the opportunity to
integrate a broad, liberal education
with a specialized area of concen
tration in a major subject. The
program also gives students with
superior academic ability and in
terests to meet as a group to explore
cultural, social and intellectual
programs and activities.
Berger said students interested
in the program can pick up applica
tions and information in Nebraska
Union 345.
Application deadline for the
program is Jan. 13,1988. A faculty
committee appointed by Robert
Furgason, vice chancellor for aca
demic affairs, will decide which
applicants are eligible for the pro
gram.
