jCoach: wrestlers tough even in super-tough conference Jy Steve Sipple Itaff Reporter Nebraska wrestling coach Tim Neumann has his program rolling in he right direction. The only problem, Neumann said, is that the rest of the Big Eight is also on a roll. Neumann said all five Big Eight teams could find themselves in the nation’stop lOaftertheNCAACham pionships in Ames, Iowa, March 17 19,1988. He said Iowa State may have the best team in the history of colle giate wrestling. But Neumann said the 1987-88 Comhuskers can compete with any one in the nation. “We’re on the upswing,” Neumann said. “Putit that way. If we were in just about any other conference you could say we were perfect.” Redshirts strong That isn’t to say things are so bad now, Neumann said. In fact, this year’s team could be Nebraska’s best ever, thanks to a strong redshirt pro gram, he said. “We got at least two guys at every weight that are as good as the people we had there last year,” Neumann said. “A lot of the guys who are going to be backups were starters last year.” Last season the Huskcrs finished with a 16-5 dual record, including a 25-16 victory over then-No. 14 Okla homa in Norman, Okla. They finished 14th at the NCAA championships, led by the second-place finish of depart ing senior Gil Sanchez, a 134-pound All America. The Huskers will also be without 150-pound Bill Ferrie, who lost in the quarterfinals of last season’s NCAA meet. Neumann said this year’s abun dance of talent is making it difficult to find a set lineup. “For the first time in five years since I’ve been here I honestly can’t give you a starting lineup until after the wrestle-offs,” he said. Intrasquad challenges The first of two Huskcr intrasquad challenge matches will be at 7:30 tonight at Aurora High School. The action moves to Burwell High School Saturday night. Neumann said he expects six indi viduals who redshirted last year to emerge from the wrestle-offs and lead the Huskers. They are 119-pound senior Wallace Dawkins, 126-pound junior Terry Cook, 134-pound fresh man David Rowe, 150-pound junior Keenan Turner, 158-pound junior Jeff Coltvetand 167-pound freshman Al len Chenoweth. In addition, Neumann said, 142 pound Jeff Castro, a senior transfer from Montana, will provide added depth. Castro, who last season became the Grizzlies’ first All-America ever, transferred to Nebraska because Montana dropped its program. Neumann listed Dawkins, Cook, Castro, Turner and Coltvet as poten tial All-Americas. “That’s barring injuries,” Neu mann said. “If we could wrestle the nationals next week, I think we’d have five or six guys contend for All America.” Nebraska has had 13 All-Americas in the last eight years. All-America status is achieved by winning three matches at the NCAA tournament. “Toughest and meanest” Neumann said Dawkins “should be somewhere in the top eight in the country” by the end of the season. Cook compiled a 24-15 record as a sophomore in 1986, including a 2-2 record at the NCAA tournament. Neumann said Turner “could be the best in the country.” “He’s probably the toughest and meanest guy in his weight in the coun try,” Neumann said. Coltvet finished 35-10 in 1986. Neumann said sophomore Sonny Manley and freshman Chris Nelson will battle for the 190-pound spot. He listed Malacek as the probable heavy weight starter. Season opener The Huskers, who began their pre season conditioning Sept. 27, open their season Nov. 13 in Laramie, Wyo., against the Wyoming Cow boys. The Huskers will then wrestle 10 meets before their home opener against Northern Iowa on Jan. 30. Nebraska is scheduled to face per ennial power Iowa on Jan. 9 at Iowa City. The Hawkeyes haven’t lost a meet at Carver Hawkeye Arena since it opened in January 1983. The Huskers will be the first Big Eight team to get a shot at breaking the streak. Iowa State, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma face the Hawkeyes after the Huskers. Neumann said a victory over the Hawkeyes would have a big impact on the Husker program, “probably more so than beating any team in the na tion.” “After beating Oklahoma last year ... I thought I was going to be voted governor,” he said. “We had boosters joining up I had never heard of. “(A victory) would be the best thing to ever happen to our program.” Neumann said Malacek, Castro and Coltvet have been named captains for this season. He also said Cody Olson, who compiled a 29-15-1 rec ord while wrestling at 177 pounds last year, will redshirt.
