Cornhuskers submit bid for volleyball tournament By Mark Derowitsch Senior Reporter Nebraska volleyball coach Terry Pettit announced Monday that the Comhuskers submitted a bid to have an opening-round match of the NCAA national tournament in Lincoln. Pettit said Nebraska also submitted a bid to have the Mideast Regional final at the Bob Devaney Sports Cen ter. He said he won’t find out if that bid has been accepted until after Nov. 26. “We’ll find out if we host the first round either the Sunday or Monday following Thanksgiving,” Pettit said. “For the regional final, we probably won’t find out until the Monday be fore the final.” Pettit said the sports center should be the site of a first-round game. “I would anticipate that we would host a first-round game because four teams host games,” Pettit said. “And we’re rated No. 1 in the region.” Last year, Nebraska defeated Pitts burgh 3-1 in the opening round of the national tournament. The Huskcrs also defeated Illinois 3-0 in the Mide ast Region finals to advance to the NCAA Final Four in Stockton, Calif. Pettit said because the NCAA didn’t move West Coast teams to other regions last season, it shouldn’t this year. “I don’t think they will, particu larly since Nebraska reached the Final Four last year,” Pettit said. “Nebraska pretty much legitimized themselves vby beating Stanford in the semifinals last year.” Despite submitting the bid, Pettit said the Huskers, 23-1, are not looking past Big Eight opponent Kansas Slate. Nebraska faces the Wildcats Tuesday night at Manhattan, Kan. A Husker victory over Kansas State will clinch a tic for the Big Eight championship. “We set several goals before the season began, and one was to win the regular-season championship,” Pettit said. “But we’re just taking one hurdle at a time. We’re just worrying about Kansas State right now.” Pettit said he expects the Wildcats to play better than they did in Lincoln. The Huskers defeated Kansas State 15-3,15-5,15-10 at the NU Coliseum. “I think they play better there (in Manhattan) than they do on the road,” Pettit said. “Most conference teams draw their biggest crowds when they play Nebraska, and I anticipate that (Tuesday) will be no difference.” Kansas State coach Scott Nelson said the Wildcats, 17-7 overall and 5 4 in the Big Eight, will have to play very well to stay with Nebraska. “Usually Nebraska plays at a high level,” Nelson said. “So hopefully we’ II play one of our belter matches. If we do, it could be a very good volley ball match. How well we play will determine the match because I expect Nebraska to play very solid volley ball.” Nelson said he has been pleased with the Wildcats’ progress this year. “We’re just about where I expected them to be,” Nelson said. “We’re a lot steadier right now than we were ear lier in the year.” - \ NU's Etienne not charged By Mike Kluck Staff Reporter Nebraska football coach Tom Osborne said Monday that no charges will be filed against Com husker linebacker LeRoy Etienne for breaking a window in a former girlfriend’s apartment at 645 S. 20th. Osborne said Etienne, a junior from New Iberia, La., was trying to retrieve his apartment key and some clothes when he broke the apartment’s window. He said Etienne was arrested Sunday morning after a neighbor saw the two-year letterman break the win dow. “He (Etienne) couldn’t get in his apartment without the key be cause he lost the other key,” Osborne said. ‘The person wasn’t » 11 ■■ home so he broke the window to get the stuff out. Somebody saw him do it so they called the police." Osborne said no charges will be filed because the owner of the apartment understood what Etienne was trying to accomplish. He said the owner of the apartment wasn’t upset because Etienne planned to replace the broken window. ‘‘The person who’s apartment it was was not upset and they under stood what happened,” Osborne said. ‘‘They’re not filing any charges against LeRoy.” “I don’t know, I guess I have done things like that where I have had to get in some place,” Osborne said. “It wasn’t a deal where he stole anything. He wasn’t planning on not replacing the window. Now that is his side of the story.” Look Forward To 99* Wednesday At ‘Ml'XGL'ES WEDNESDAYS, 8 pm-12 am M EVERYTHING IN THE HOUSE JUST 99 CENTS That means. . .99 cent pitchers 99 cent call drinks 99 cent imports 99 cent blended drinks - S', ^ V’ 99 cent ice cream drinks fMJySJCj f/FS I NO COVER! ^ 91/i and p <*> | BASKIN (M) ROBBINS j I TREAT A FRIEND! j Buy one yet one free . . .
