Oklahoma Sooners tabbed as national champions
By Mark Derowitsch
Senior Reporter
With six of nine first-place votes,
the Oklahoma Sooners emerged as
the preseason favorite of the 1987
magazine consensus.
The Sooners, who have been the
preseason No. 1 for the past three
seasons, easily out-distanced second
place Ohio State and third-place
Nebraska. Oklahoma finished with
157 points, while the Buckeyes had
147 and the Comhuskers 144.
Points were awarded on a one
through 20 basis, with 20 points
awarded for a first-place vote.
Oklahoma, which finished third
last season, was ranked second by
both Football Action and Sports
magazines. The Sooners were rated
No. 1 by Street and Smith, Don
Heinricks, College Football Year
book, Lindy's.The Sporting News,
and Athlons magazines.
The only other teams to receive
first-place votes were Clemson and
Nebraska. The Tigers were rated No.
1 by Football Action and Nebraska
was rated first by both Sport and
Inside Sports.
Hounding out the top 10 were
UCLA, Miami (Fla.), Louisiana State,
Clemson, Michigan, Auburn and
Florida State.
. .we will be
very disap
pointed if we
don’t contend
for the top spot.’
—Switzer
The magazine consensus rated
Penn State No. 11, followed by
Arkansas, Texas A&M, Iowa and
Arizona State. Notre Dame, Pitts
burgh, Tennessee, Georgia and USC
rounded out the top 20.
Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer
said he thinks the Sooners deserve
the No. 1 ranking.
“There are some problems, of
course, but we will be very disap
pointed if we don’t contend for the
top spot," Switzer said.
The Sooners return nine offensive
and six defensive starters from last
year’s 11-1 team that defeated
Arkansas 42-8 in the 1987 Orange
Bowl.
Included among the returning
offensive starters are quarterack
Jamelle Holieway and fullback Ly
dell Carr. Holieway, the Big Eight
offense player of the year last sea
son, rushed for 811 yards and scored
eight touchdowns. Carr, the Sooners
second leading rusher, rushed for
548 yards and five touchdowns.
1 The top defensive starters return
ing are defensive back David Vickers
and defensive end Darrell Reed.
Vickers was named a second-team
All America by The Associated Press
last season, while Reed is a three
time all Big Eight selection.
