The Sooners, who have been the preseason No. 1 for the past three seasons, easily out-distanced second place Ohio State and third-place Nebraska. Oklahoma finished with 157 points, while the Buckeyes had 147 and the Comhuskers 144. Points were awarded on a one through 20 basis, with 20 points awarded for a first-place vote. Oklahoma, which finished third last season, was ranked second by both Football Action and Sports magazines. The Sooners were rated No. 1 by Street and Smith, Don Heinricks, College Football Year book, Lindy's.The Sporting News, and Athlons magazines. The only other teams to receive first-place votes were Clemson and Nebraska. The Tigers were rated No. 1 by Football Action and Nebraska was rated first by both Sport and Inside Sports. Hounding out the top 10 were UCLA, Miami (Fla.), Louisiana State, Clemson, Michigan, Auburn and Florida State. . .we will be very disap pointed if we don’t contend for the top spot.’ —Switzer The magazine consensus rated Penn State No. 11, followed by Arkansas, Texas A&M, Iowa and Arizona State. Notre Dame, Pitts burgh, Tennessee, Georgia and USC rounded out the top 20. Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer said he thinks the Sooners deserve the No. 1 ranking. “There are some problems, of course, but we will be very disap pointed if we don’t contend for the top spot," Switzer said. The Sooners return nine offensive and six defensive starters from last year’s 11-1 team that defeated Arkansas 42-8 in the 1987 Orange Bowl. Included among the returning offensive starters are quarterack Jamelle Holieway and fullback Ly dell Carr. Holieway, the Big Eight offense player of the year last sea son, rushed for 811 yards and scored eight touchdowns. Carr, the Sooners second leading rusher, rushed for 548 yards and five touchdowns. 1 The top defensive starters return ing are defensive back David Vickers and defensive end Darrell Reed.
