Huskers win title
Women9 cross-comtey takes tike day

Last weekend the women's cross
country team proved why it Is the No.
4-ranked team In the country when It
came from behind to win the Cal Poly
San Luis Obispo Invitational,
The Cornhuskers were behind at the
two-mile mark when Laura Wight and
Sammie Resh moved up from 14 and
16th place to seventh and eighth,
Coach Jay Dirksen said.
The Huskers won the meet with 68
points, while Cal Poly (SLO) finished a
close second with 70. UCLA finished

Dirksen said what hurt the Huskers
most was the absence of senior Jill
Noel, who was out with a foot Injury. He
said the team lost 20 points because
Noel didn't run.
Without Noel the Huskers still ran
well. Dirksen said Nebraska had three
of their seven runners finish In the top
20. The Huskers had runners finish
22nd and 26th, while Cal Poly's runners
finished first, 10th, 1 1th, 19th and 25th.
"This was the best the girls have run
all season," Dirksen said. "Every week

The top finisher for the'Huskcrs was
Junior Jean Verster. Verster finished
Uth. Dirksen said the reason Verster
finished 1 1th was because he went out
too fast at the start of the race.
Dirksen said the men's team is run
ning very well and could finish as high
as third In the Big Eight. Last year,
Nebraska finished fifth. Dirksen said it
will be tough for the men's team to
finish among the top two of the confer
ence because both Iowa State and
Colorado have strong teams.

transfer Jodi Fisher finished 16th, and
Craig Vanderbeek finished 20th.
"Arkansas has a great team and will
probably win the national champion
ship. I don't see anybody beating them,"
Dirksen said. "But it was a good exper
ience for our runners to run against
that tough of competition."
Dirksen said that during the next
couple of weeks workouts won't be as
intense. Coaches will concentrate on
getting the runners rested up and
ready for the Big Eight competition,
Dirksen said.
