Rush week complete; 476 women pledge By Rob Fraass Staff Reporter Saturday saw the end of a week of excitment and tough decisions for 476 pledges when UNL sororities selected their new members for the 1986-87 school year. In recent years, the numbers of stu dents in sororities and fraternities have increased nationwide after a decline in the late '60s, said Jayne Wade Anderson, director of the Panhel lenic Association. However, the sorority population has remained constant over the years, she said. "Nebraska has always had a strong sorority program" Anderson said. "In the 20-plus years I've been here, it's never declined." During Rush Week, pledges learn about the sororities' programs, organi zations, activities, and goals for aca demic achievement, Anderson said. "Basically, it's a getting-to-know-each-other process," she said. The time frame for rush was changed this year. For the past two years, rush has been held over the Labor Day week end rather than before school. The scheduling has fluctuated from year to year and Anderson said she didn't know if the time change will be permanent. "I'm sure some liked the change, while others didn't because of other activities they had that week," she said. Erin Bausch, a newly pledged mem ber of Kappa Alpha Theta, said that sororities provide students with an alternative lifestyle to residence hall life. - "You meet so many people from so many different sororities that it's tough and confusing to decide," she said at a post-pledging celebration. For Kappa Alpha Theta pledge Erika Erskine, the people were the deciding factor. "I just stuck with the people I liked," she said. "I'm really looking forward to a lot of fun and life-long friendships." Room changes made CHANGES from Page 6 represent the new ones.
