Arab punks shoot down a U.S. F-10
and put the pilot on trial.
The I'nited States, a helpless giant,
can only sit on the sidelines and
attempt to negotiate his release.
This part, at least, of "Iron Eagle"
(currently showing at the Plaza Four)
is believable. After this our imagina

Doug Masters, played by Jason (led
rich, is the son of the captured U.S.
pilot. He is determined to free his
father with or without the help of the
government.
Doug, a high school senior, is quite a
hotshot pilot himself, but even so, he's
going to need some help for this caper.
With this in mind he enlists the aid of
Col. Chappy Sinclair, a retired fighter

pilot played by Louis Gossett, Jr. Chappy
may be retired, but he's still got the
"eye of the tiger."
For logistical support, Doug calls on
his high school chums. They rush
around the air base, deftly arranging
the details of the rescue operation.
To make a long (120 minutes) film
short, Doug and Chappy successfully
complete their mission, leveling half
the country- and blowing the dastardly
Arab leader out of the sky in the
process.
Basically, "Iron Eagle" falls into the
Rambo-Rocky IV mode, i.e. let's wave
the flag and kick some ass. Audiences
eat this kind of stuff up.
It's easy to see why. Movies have
always given us what we can't have in
real life, whether it's love or revenge,
and "Iron Eagle" has plenty of the lat
ter. Doug and Chappy succeed in their
mission. We'd like to do the same thing
to those "damn Libyans."
The danger in all of this is that peo
ple will confuse real life with the
movies. People see a bunch of teenagers

why the Air Force or the Marines can't
do the same. And so once again the line
between fact and fiction is blurred.
