Nebraska baseball coach John Sanders gave
Creighton's Jim Hendry a rude welcome in his
coaching debut at Buck Eeltzer field Wednesday.
Hendry, who over the weekend was forced to
watch his Bluejays drop a pair of double headers
at Indiana State, was forced to watch more of the
same action, as the Huskers swept Creighton by
scores of 12-7 and 3-1 for their first double
header sweep of the Bluejays since 1881.
"I can't really explain why we haven't been
real successful with Creighton in the past,"
Sanders said. "But I can say that our sucqess
today was built on the fact that we had two
pretty good games, both offensively and de
fensively. Shortstop Larry Mims, designated hitter Mark
Kister and leftfielder Rich King started the
Cornhusker's success by leading the assault on
the Bluejay's Tom Drees as Nebraska pounded
him for nine hits, three walks and seven runs in
only four innings.
rue Huskers' Eogcr Webb, Mark Davis, and
Bill Mulligan ail countered Dress' performance
by stopping Creighton cr, three earned rur.3 on
ten hits snd seven walks.
"I thought we played really well the first
game," Sanders said. "We had a few breakdowns
defensively (the Huskers committed a total of
five errors in the game) but other than that we
played really well."
The Huskers carried their success over into
the second game as the trio of Bret Beede, John
Lepley and Bill "Earn Bam" McGuire held
Creighton with only one hit and three walks
while striking out six over seven innings.

One cf the pre-meet favorites to win the all

tics meet is Charles Lakes cf Illinois.
Lakes, a junior from NewhA Calit, is ranked
second in the nation in the aJi-srcxd with a
67.75 average. He is the cn!y returning NCAA
individual event champion. He won the high bar
last year with a 9.S5. He ha3 two perfect scores in
the high bar this year.
Lakes said he is feeling a little bit of pressure
because of the media attention he i3 getting in
Champaign, 111.
"A lot of people are expecting ma to do some
great things at this meet," Lakes said. "But all I
want to do is go out there and have fan, because
gymnastics is supposed to be fun."
Lakes said he is still re -covering mentally from
the pressure cf the Eig Ten championships. He
the trio of Nebraska pitchers needed, as Mims won his second ccuasecutive Eig Ten all-around
went one of three with a run-scoring triple, while
Duncan hit his seventh home run of the season
over the 400-yard center field fence.
'.'We've got more offensive ability this year
than we did last season," Sanders said. "That
should make for an exciting Big Eight finish.
title with a 57.75, took first on the parallel bars,
tied for first on the high bar and took second in
the floor exercise.
Lakes picked up gymnastics late. He didn't
start competing until he was 13.
It took four years for Lakes to start competing
at a h!jh level. In high sahcel, he was a member
cf the Callfamia State All-Star tssm end ttso a
member of the Junior Elite team. After the NCAA
Giampienahips last year, he competed in the
world urdvercdty games.
Lakes has had good success this year. He won
the all-are-und title at the UCLA Invitational with
a career high score cf 58.35, Lakes defeated most
cf the top gymnasts which he will compete
against g?in this weekend.
Lakes said the people that will give him the
most competition are Tory Pineda cfUCLA, Dan
Hsyden of Arizona State, Terry Eartlett cf Pern
State and Nebraska's Wes Suter.
"If I can hit all six events, then I w ill have a
very good chance cf winning the all-around,"
Lakes said,
Illinois coach Yoshi K&y&sake said Lakes has
a good chance to win the all-around competition.
He said training for this meet has been hard fcr
nationals.
"Charles is a team person, and when his
teammates aren't training with him, it is very
hard for him to get motM&ted," Rayssake said.
Hayasake said the best quality fekrat Lakes is
his ability to work hard and improve en his past
mistakes. Ha said he has improved every year.
