Call: 472-2454 u By Colleen Kenney Dally Nebraskan Staff Reporter A decision made by Vice Chan cellor John Yost has hurt the pride of many members of the UNL marching band. Yost requested about a month ago that two baton twirlers be allowed to perform with the UNL band during half time of last Saturday's game, in addition to solo twirler Kim Schureman. Shaun Benson and Deanne Bochart, both UNL students, said they were not sure why they were asked to join in the performance, but were glad for the "chance of a lifetime," Benson said. Yost also passed this decision down to Marching Band Director William Ballenger and Director of Bands Robert Fought. Ballenger and Fought declined to comment. Benson was the baton twirling champion for Iowa, as Bochart was for Nebraska and Schure man was for Kansas. They all auditioned for the UNL solo twirler position last May. Drum major Brian Walker was on the panel that selected Schureman. He said he thinks that by allowing the two other twirlers to per form, the auditioning system has been weakened. "I think what really bothers the band is that we had no choice in the matter. We didn't want three twirlers, we wanted one," Walker said. "We have nothing against the two girls, but it's just so unfair to ' our system," Walker said. The majority of the band members were mad, especially the group's veteran members, Walker said. Messier said it is "a shame" that a higher authority such as Yost can select who will perform with the band. He said it would be like telling football coach Tom Osborne to play someone who is good, but who is not on the UNL football team. "Next the people upstairs will be telling us what songs to play and how to march," one band member said. Yost, who declined comment on the decision, did say the band should not be embarrassed. He said his office has promoted other half time guest appearances in cooperation with the band and at the request of his constituency. Yost said the final decision was left to Fought and Ballenger. "But for them to say they're starting a Christian church is a perversion of everything that's right." Father Peter Gadient, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church, also is against the MCC. "I really am not in favor of it. Why would they want to have a church? We can work with these people in other ways to help their problem " Gadient said. Roger Sasse, paster of the Lu theran Student Center at UNL, said he supports the MCC, but thinks "it's a real tragedy that there has to be a separate church. v "What I wish is the gay and les bian folks would help us change the churches that are, instead of separating." Besides the MCC, Dahl said he belongs to another fundamental ist church. He said he considers himself a "conservative and evan gelical" Christian. He said he knows the Bible. "I don't think the Bible says what the Church says it does" about the immorality of homo sexuality, he said. Dahl said he thingks it's OK for a Christian to have homosexual feelings, but he does not condone promiscuity. "Whatever their sexual orien tation, a Christian is bound to live in a responsible manner," he said.
