tational last weekend.
Coach Jay Dirksen said the
women did a great job and all ran
solid races.
The start was really fast but
they moved up really well," Dirksen
said. "All the women ran well and
ran smart races."
Erickson finished in sixth place
with a time of 1 7:01, her personal
best. Wight ran a 17:09 and fin
ished 10th. Amen ran a 17:20 and
finished 12th while Noel finished
16th.
The Cornhuskers finished first
out of 13 teams with 76 points.
Illinois took second with 108
points and Missouri finished third
with 113 points.
The men's team finished in
fourth place. Dirksen said Kurt
Russell, Tom Hoffman and Bryan
Clark ran excellent races. Russell
finished in third place with a time
of 30:32, Hoffman finished fifth at
30:36 and Bryan Clark finished
sixth with 30:40.
Dirksen said the difference in
' the meet was the fifth man. Kurt
Vanderbeek finished in 28th vltu
a time of 31:38. Gerard O'Ca!
laghan finished in 36th.
Both teams will travel to
Boulder, Colo., next weekend for
the Colorado Invitational Dirksen
said this will be a tough meet
because of the altitude and
because both Iowa State teams
will be there. The Iowa State
men's team Is ranked second in
the nation.

Umpire strike
stifles playoffs
By the Eewters News Service -
NEW YORK - The Major League
Umpires Association called a
strike today on the eve of the
American and National League
playoffs, confronting baseball com
, missioner Peter Ueberroth with a
crisis on his first day in office.
Despite the strike, Ueberroth
said through a spokesman that
the playoffs, which open today in
Chicago and Kansas City, would
be played.
"Officially, it's not a strike until
tomorrow," said Rick Cerrone, a
spokesman for Ueberroth. There
are alternate plans and the games
will go on as scheduled."
Cerrone declined to say what
the alternate plans vere, but it
was believed that minor league
umpires, and perhaps even ama
teur umpires, would be used in
the event the assigned umpires
fail to show up, as was the case
during a short-lived strike at the
start of the 1979 season.
The surprise strike, which came
the day after the regular baseball
season ended, was said to involve
wages.
Cerrone said ne gotktions aimed
at resolving the dispute were con
tinuing today.
