Despite the strike, Ueberroth said through a spokesman that the playoffs, which open today in Chicago and Kansas City, would be played. "Officially, it's not a strike until tomorrow," said Rick Cerrone, a spokesman for Ueberroth. There are alternate plans and the games will go on as scheduled." Cerrone declined to say what the alternate plans vere, but it was believed that minor league umpires, and perhaps even ama teur umpires, would be used in the event the assigned umpires fail to show up, as was the case during a short-lived strike at the start of the 1979 season. The surprise strike, which came the day after the regular baseball season ended, was said to involve wages. Cerrone said ne gotktions aimed at resolving the dispute were con tinuing today.
