Beverly Nieveen of Adams received a $100 scholarship and a bronze statue of a Hereford bull earlier this month at the Junior Hereford Associat ion convention in Kansas City, Mo. The other four winners are from Iowa, New Mexico, South Dakota and Arizona. Nieveen has been an active member of the Ne braska Junior Hereford Association for several years. She has served as public relations director, treasurer and state Here ford queen and is currently the group's president. Nieveen said she had to fill out a lengthy form to apply for the achievement award. The form asked for information about her grades from high school and college and about her activities. Nieveen said she pro bably received the award because of her involvement in the Nebraska Junior Hereford Association and its efforts in starting the Hereford Bowl, first on the state level and then the national level. , The Hereford Bowl a youth-oriented quiz game, similar to the College Bowl, she said. "Hopefully it's a fun and educating experience for both the spectators and the participants," Nieveen said. Questions are about Here ford and the beef cattle industry, she added. Two teams participate at each bowl. On the national level, it's state against state. The Nebraska team made it into the semifinal round last year at the first national Hereford Bowl. Nieveen said the idea started two years ago when the Nebraska Junior Here ford Association Board met and saw a need for an edu cational program. "We really felt we were lacking," she said, "so Ne braska came up with the idea of the Hereford Bowl." Once the board came up with the idea, it received a lot pf support from adult members of the Hereford Association, she said. Doyle Wolverton, an ex tension youth specialist in animal science at UNL, was probably the biggest help in getting the bowl going, Nieveen said. The difficulty in estab lishing the program was that they had to start from the ground level, she said. "We needed the enthus iasm of members and the adults - we needed their backing in order to start the program," she said. The association started the bowl in March 1981. After extensive letter writ ing and a presentation by Nieveen to the national board, the Nebraska Junior Association gave a demon stration at the national convention in November 1981. Since then, at least five other states have adopted the program. In July 1982, the first national Hereford Bowl was held at the All-American Hereford Expo in Des Moines, Iowa. Nieveen's interest in Hereford cattle goes back at least 10 years. Her father, Lavern Nieveen, who has been raising Herefords for about 30 years, gave her a heifer when Nieveen was 12. From that heifer, she started the herd that is financing her college education. liffl Am IX. Jjlpj I - Adapted fa T-i and December 4, 11, 12, 18, 19 at 3:00 PM -Cur fJ7 Howell Theatre 12th & R Sts.
