Jayhawks' "best in years'
dumps UNL track team
By Ron Powell
Kansas Track Coach Bob Timmons said
he has come into the Nebraska dual meet
with good teams before, and then been
"kicked" by the Huskers.
But it was the Jayhawks who did the
kicking Saturday, as KU defeated UNL 87
44 in their annual dual. Timmons admits,
though, that this year's KU track team is
the best he's had in several years.
"1 was surprised by the score but I
wasn't surprised how our guys performed,"
Timmons said. "We had one of those good
days you have one in a while." .
UNL Track Coach Frank Sevigne said
the Jayhawks are stronger than in recent
years.
"They performed a lot better than I
thought they would," Sevigne said. "They
(KU) said they were going to be tough, but
not this tough.
'Not good enough'
"The way they (KU) did today, it'
going to be . hard for anyone to stay witr.
them in the Big Eight. We had some good
performances, but they weren't good
enough."
One of those "good performances" foi
the Huskers came from senior Scott Poeh
ling, who was the Huskers' only double
winner, capturing the mile run (4:11) and
the 1,000 yard run (2:10.15). Poehling's
1,000 time was good enough to qualify for
the NCAA Indoor championships.
Poehling said qualifying for nationals
wasn't on his mind during the meet..
"Just running in a meet like this, with
this competition, the teams run for place
and the times will take care of themselves,"
Poehling said.
Prevent early peak
Normallv. Poehline would he mnnina in
the 600 and 880 events, but he said he is
running longer distances to keep himself
from peaking too early in the season. Poeh
ling said it's difficult getting adjusted to
pacing himself through the season.
"I've just got to be more patient " Poeh
ling said. "1 can't get overanxious."
Two other Huskers qualified for the
NCAA meet. Everton DaCosta qualified in
the 600 with a 1:10.36 timing, 'good
enough for third place. An upset occurred
in the 600 when KU's Mike Ricks beat
teammate and defending Big Eight 600
Indoor Champion Lester Mickens. .
Husker pole vaulter Randy Raymond
qualified for the NCAA meet with his vault
of 16-6. Raymond finished second to rival
Jeff Buckingham, the Big Eight indoor and
outdoor champion,' who cleared 17-0 34.
Buckingham's vault was one of two new
Bob Devaney Sports Center records set in
the meet. The other was set by KU's Deon
Hogan who ran a :47.64 in the 440.
Not satisfied
Although Raymond tied his own indoor
school record, he said he wasn't satisfied
with the vault. '
"Things didn't click quite right today,"
Raymond said, "l.know I can clear 17 feet
indoors,' but. the technique wasn't quite
there. It's all technique now."
There were two other bright spots for
the Huskers. Randy Brooks won the 60
yard high hurdles while Erik Korshoj,
Doug Babbitt and Ned Turner took first,
second and, third respectively in the shot
put. for the Huskers.
The next action for the Huskers, now
M in duals, is the Husker Invitational Saturday.

Women win, men lose to Iowa State in swim meet
By Frank Hassler
Assistant News Editor
The Nebraska men's and women's swimming and diving
teams split dual meets Saturday against Iowa State, with
the women winning, 70-61, and the men losing, 60-53.
It was the first time Iowa State had faced the Husker
women this year, and women's Coach Ray Huppert said
he was impressed with the Cyclones.
"They're a good team ; probably one of the top three in
the Big Eight, along with ourselves and Kansas," Huppert
said.
Jo Dea Eckstrom, who had been sidelined with mono
nucleosis, was one of two triple winners for UNL. Eck
strom, a junior from Marshall, Minn., won the 100-yard
and 200-yard butterfly races in 1:00.1 and 2:09.1, along
with the 200 backstroke in 2: 13.9.
Sherri Hay ward, a freshman from Columbus, Ohio,
won the 500 freestyle in 5:09.3, the 100 backstroke in
1 :01 .3 and the 400 individual medley in 4:36.7.
Rene Sullivan and Carol Hall each won one race and
finished second in another. Hall won the 100 breaststroke
in 1:11.8, took second in the 50 freestyle. Sullivan won
the 100 freestyle in 53.8 and finished second in the 200
freestyle.
Stacey Porter finished second in the three-meter diving,
and Carol Berger took third in both the one and three
meter events.
Huppert said he was pleased with the showing of Ann
Rinne, who dropped her time down to 1:12.6 to take
third in the 100-meter breaststroke.
The men lost to Iowa State, a team they had beaten in "
their last two meetings; a dual meet during semester break
and the Huskers' Mid-Winter Invitational Jan. 19.
The Huskers' strongest showings were in diving.
Steve Elliott, Todd Bendkowski and Scott Hinrichs '
swept the top three places in one-meter diving. Elliott,
Hinrichs, Lance Green and Doug Connours took the top
four spots in the three-meter event.
Anders Rutqvist was the other Husker double winner,
taking the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races in 1 :44.9 and
4:39.3. ' (
, Rick Rhodes and Jerry Olszewski took the top two
places in the 200-meter breaststroke.
UNL's only other win came in the 400 freestyle relay
when Rutqvist, Jim Korff, Tim Boyd and Will Douglass'
3:09.6 topped 1SU by almost six seconds.
"That's our best in-season (pre Big Eight meet) time
ever in that race," UNL Coach Cal Bentz said, adding that
he was not displeased with his swimmers' efforts despite
the loss.
