But it was the Jayhawks who did the kicking Saturday, as KU defeated UNL 87 44 in their annual dual. Timmons admits, though, that this year's KU track team is the best he's had in several years. "1 was surprised by the score but I wasn't surprised how our guys performed," Timmons said. "We had one of those good days you have one in a while." . UNL Track Coach Frank Sevigne said the Jayhawks are stronger than in recent years. "They performed a lot better than I thought they would," Sevigne said. "They (KU) said they were going to be tough, but not this tough. 'Not good enough' "The way they (KU) did today, it' going to be . hard for anyone to stay witr. them in the Big Eight. We had some good performances, but they weren't good enough." One of those "good performances" foi the Huskers came from senior Scott Poeh ling, who was the Huskers' only double winner, capturing the mile run (4:11) and the 1,000 yard run (2:10.15). Poehling's 1,000 time was good enough to qualify for the NCAA Indoor championships. Poehling said qualifying for nationals wasn't on his mind during the meet.. "Just running in a meet like this, with this competition, the teams run for place and the times will take care of themselves," Poehling said. Prevent early peak Normallv. Poehline would he mnnina in the 600 and 880 events, but he said he is running longer distances to keep himself from peaking too early in the season. Poeh ling said it's difficult getting adjusted to pacing himself through the season. "I've just got to be more patient " Poeh ling said. "1 can't get overanxious." Two other Huskers qualified for the NCAA meet. Everton DaCosta qualified in the 600 with a 1:10.36 timing, 'good enough for third place. An upset occurred in the 600 when KU's Mike Ricks beat teammate and defending Big Eight 600 Indoor Champion Lester Mickens. . Husker pole vaulter Randy Raymond qualified for the NCAA meet with his vault of 16-6. Raymond finished second to rival Jeff Buckingham, the Big Eight indoor and outdoor champion,' who cleared 17-0 34. Buckingham's vault was one of two new Bob Devaney Sports Center records set in the meet. The other was set by KU's Deon Hogan who ran a :47.64 in the 440. Not satisfied Although Raymond tied his own indoor school record, he said he wasn't satisfied with the vault. ' "Things didn't click quite right today," Raymond said, "l.know I can clear 17 feet indoors,' but. the technique wasn't quite there. It's all technique now." There were two other bright spots for the Huskers. Randy Brooks won the 60 yard high hurdles while Erik Korshoj, Doug Babbitt and Ned Turner took first, second and, third respectively in the shot put. for the Huskers. The next action for the Huskers, now M in duals, is the Husker Invitational Saturday. v - j I W o OjjO o O G pS o o Photo by Mark Billingsley Nebraska gymnast Renee Reisdorff leaps to first place in the balance beam . event during the Huskers' narrow victory over Minnesota Saturday.
