Lincoln or University of
Nebraska-Omaha Elemen
tary Education Depart
ments one night a week to
teach a graduate level
course for approximately 25
teachers from school In
southeastern Nebraska.
The program started in the
faU of 1075, will begin its
fifth year under the direc
tion of O.W. Kopp, pro
fessor and chairman of the
Elementary Education
Department tn UNL'i
Teachers College. The first
masters degree were
awarded in May, 1978 and
so far 15 students have
earned their degree in the
program.
The program was
established after officials at
Peru State College cited a
need for graduate level
courses to serve teachers in
the area who were In
terested tn furthering their
level courses at Peru.
Typically. 20-25 students
have enrolled tn courses of
fered during both the first
and second aemester and in
the aummer at Peru. Most
of the faculty members who
have taught the 18 classes
ao far offered through the
program have been from
UNL, but aome faculty
members from UNL have
also taught classes at Peru.
Kopp aaid that perhaps
the greatest mark of suc
cess for the program has
been the "positive working
relationship1 between Peru
and UNL, and the will
ingness of UNO to
cooperate tn the program.
A unique feature of the
program, he said, is the
Area Advisory Board which
meets tn the faU and spr
ings of each year to provide
suggestions for programm-
education and Increasing tng. The Advisory Board m-
their professional com- eludes area auperinten
petencies. Peru, as a state dents of schools, principals,
college without a graduate classroom teachers, and col
program told the Universl- lege representatives from
ty of Nebraska it would' Peru, UNL and UNO.
