Warning: LP is ominous
By Jeff Taebel
If you've ventured into Dirt Cheap late
ly, you may have noticed an ominous look
ing album by a group. The Crap Detectors
entitled Victims Of The Media.
Upon further inspection, you might
have seen that the album jacket contained
several cautionary messages, such as "Warn-ing-This
record can be harmful and
hazardous to close-minded or rationalizing
beings, if you fit into a behavioral pattern,
we urge you to put this record down and
go to the nextstack," and "Caution: De
programming may occur."
At this point, you may have begun to
suspect that this is an album by local tale'nt
talent, and you would have been right. The
Crap Detectors are, in essence, Jim Jacobi
of Lincoln who wrote the album's fourteen
songs as well as singing lead and playing
guitar, bass and synthesized special effects
with some help from Herbie Hill on drums.
Jacobi began writing the music for the
album in the summer of 1976, before the
New Wave explosion really took place, yet
the hard-driving songs have a definite New.
Wave sound.
Side one of the album is subtitled
"Rude, Rash and Raw" and opens with the
powerful title song, "Victims Of The
Media," which has a memorable chorus:
"Victims of the mediavictims of the lies
victims of a rationalsthat's cleverly dis
guised." Other highlights on the side include a
spacy instrumental called "Eichmannism"
and a punk rock mainfesto entitled "Slave
Of The New Wave."
Side two, subtitled "Blunt, Brutal and
Bewildering," contains a dirge-like, semi
acoustic number called "Desparate Depres
sion" which is followed by a blazing rocker
called "Justify," which features an inter
esting vocal performance that may remind
some of Antennae Jimmy Simmons of
Captain Beefheart's Magic Band.
The album was recorded at Jacobi's
home on a four-track recorder. The sound
quality, while occasionally muddy on the
vocals, is surprisingly good for such an endeavor.

Victims Of The Media is a limited
edition album of sorts. Since The Crap
Detectors did not receive a six-figure
contract from one of the major record
labels, they had to foot the album-pressing
bill themselves and, as a result; the album is
being sold on a consignment basis and is
currently available only at Dirt Cheap.
Jacobi said more copies of the album
could be pressed and distributed to other
local record stores if it sells well at Dirt
Cheap. He said he has no immediate plans
for getting a band together to play his
music locally because there is not, as yet, a
large audience for this sort of music in this
area.
However, if Victims Of The Media
proves successful, we may be seeing
another Crap Detectors effort from Jacobi
in the future. In the meantime, if you're
interested in some loud and brash rock
from a genuine local New Wave artist, you
might give Victims Of The Media a try.

involving Dr. Randolph during the

ing Dr. Randolph caring for two
young burn victims as well as infant
Fredericko Vargas (pictured with the
doctor).
Hand-held cameras follow Dr.
