Lincoln s latest baby spawned by the dance movement is Dances for Passers-By. The fledgling company, co-directed by Marguerite Fishman and Irene Wachtel, has taken up residence in the lower level of St. Mark's on-the-Campus Episcopal Church, 1309 R St. Incorporated as a non-profit-making organization on Oct. 24, 1977, the company will be a performing group, Wachtel said. Both Wachtel and Fishman also will teach classes in modern dance technique, improvisation, com position and repertory, she said. The classes will be at St. Mark's. "I think our approach to dance is very different," Wachtel said. Wachtel, who received her bachelor of arts degree in dance at Mills College in Oakland, Calif., and her master's degree at Ohio State University, said much of the com pany's philosophy is based on the Alexander Technique. According to Wachtel, the Alexander principle demon strates that movement is easy and possible if a dancer does not interfere with his. or her natural flexibility, balance and coordination. In other words, they may have some habits that interfere with movement and by showing them those habits they can improve their movement." The ten-week class session begins Tuesday, Jan. 17. Classes are scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday and Satur day and will be taught by both Wachtel and Fishman. Wachtel described the company's choreography as en vironmental. The dancers will relate to space and will not perform in the traditional frontal style, (stage with audience in front), she explained. She said the dances can be performed anywhere there is adequate space museums, parks, festivals or even in the street. "Our compositions will stress freedom of experience, things not part of the conscious," Wachtel said. Dances for Passers-By will perform Jan. 27 at Wal purgisnacht in Nebraska Union 243, 10:30 pjn. The company plans a public performance for February or March and also is preparing a children's concert. It also will be involved in a program sponsored by the Lincoln Community Arts Council where they will dance for senior citizens. , At three months most babies can barely crawl.
