Huskers chalk up 1st win
UNL's womens volleyball team success
fully opened their season Saturday with
strong set ups and power spikes to sweep
past Drake University in straight sets.
The Huskers downed Drake 15-5, 154,
15-8 at the Coliseum,
Husker Coach Terry Pettit said UNL
played well for a first game.
"We haven't had time to work on team
skills, Pettit said. So we just went out to
have a good time."
Pettit praised the performacne of Sue
Leudtker, Ann Haberman and Connie
Bloom and the team's offense. Setting is a
major part of UNL's offense and it is es
pecially important to improve those skills,
Pettit said.
UNL has good athletes, but is not a
good team yet, Pettit said. He said he has
live or six athletes who could become team
leaders.
Luedtke said she often assumes the
leadership role because she is a setter.
"My position on the court makes it
easy for me to be a leader," she said. "I
stand out there and keep the girls talking."
The team goal, she said is to win region
als. UNL has placed second at regionals the
last two years.

Intramural sports to begin
Intramural Softball is underway at UNL
with intramural flag football just around
the corner. :
Most of the 149 Softball teams have
played one game, according to intramural
coordinator Gale Wiedow.
Teams will play five regular season
games. Playoffs begin Oct. 10 for teams
that win at least half jheir games.
There are 38 more teams this year than
last year, Wiedow said. Teams are divided
into three leagues-independent, dormitory
and fraternity.
The leagues are divided into divisions,
three divisions in the dormitory and frater
nity leagues and two in the independent
league.
'The divisions are primarily different
skill levels" Wiedow said. "They help us
to facilitate enough teams for the number
of people who want to play ."
Intramural softball is divided into slow
pitch and fast pitch teams. Wiedow said
there are 11- fast pitch teams on campus
this year.
A $20 entry fee for flag football teams
is due. Sept. 28. Flag football will be organ
ized like softball.. Last year, there were
169 intramural football teams. .
