UNL journalists rate high,
Daily Nebraskan gets firs
UNL journalists and the Daily Neb-,
raskan cornered nearly one-third of the
awards in the Mark of Excellence report
ing and writing competition Saturday in
Columbia, Mo.
UNL won 12 of the 37 possible awards
presented at the region seven convention
of the Society of Professional Journalists,
Sigma Delta Chi. Closest competition was
Southern Illinois University at Edwards
ville with seven awards.
The UNL entries were in competition
with 13 other colleges and universities
from a six-state area. This included schools
from Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa,
Nebraska and South Dakota. Professional
journalists and journalism professors
judged the entries.
The first semester edition of the Daily
Nebraskan won first place as the best
all-around student newspaper. Theresa
Forsman was editor-in-chief of the award
winning issues.
Ron Ruggless won UNL's other first
place award in the best news story compe
tition. " Other awards collected by UNL at the
conference include:
Paula Dittrick, third place, newswriting;
Theresa Forsman, second place, editorial
writing; Terri Willson, third place, maga
zine writing; Deb Gray and Lynn Roberts,
honorable mentions, magazine writing;
Third Dimension, second place, best stu
dent magazine; -30- magazine, produced
by the UNL School of Journalism, honor
able mention, best student magazine; John.
Kalkowski, third place, feature photo
graphy; Cindy Walkowiak, third place radio
reporting; and Ron Wheeler, second place,
editorial cartoon.
