UNL won 12 of the 37 possible awards presented at the region seven convention of the Society of Professional Journalists, Sigma Delta Chi. Closest competition was Southern Illinois University at Edwards ville with seven awards. The UNL entries were in competition with 13 other colleges and universities from a six-state area. This included schools from Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota. Professional journalists and journalism professors judged the entries. The first semester edition of the Daily Nebraskan won first place as the best all-around student newspaper. Theresa Forsman was editor-in-chief of the award winning issues. Ron Ruggless won UNL's other first place award in the best news story compe tition.
