Indian dsnths
MuTzaffarnasar, India-Several Moslem
leaders said Wednesday that at least 50
persons and possible as many as 150 were
killed when police opened fire last week on
villagers protesting the government's
sterilization policy. The district magistrate
for this predominantly Moslem region of
Uttar Pradesh State acknowledged in an
interview that a minor problem, a small
scuffle" had taken place, but he denied any
shots had been fired and denied anyone
had been wounded or killed. In New Delhi,
however, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi
for the first time admitted there had been
deaths in connection with the govern
ment's drive to control its population
explosion by encouraging Indians with
more than two children to undergo
sterilization.
Anderson protests
Democratic First District House can
didate Pauline Anderson says she plans
to protest the editorial endorsement of
Rep. Charles Thone by the Kearney
based NTV Network to the Federal
Communications Commission. In a pre
pared release, Anderson said the endorse
ment was unfair because station manager
James Johnson is a member of the
Republican State Central Committee.'
Suit dismissed
Gering-Scotts duff County District
Court Judge Alfred Kortum Wednes
day dismissed a suit filed by former Wyo
ming Congressional contender Al Ham
burg against county commissioners and
the Scotts Bluff Star-Herald. Hamburg
initially had filed suit against the
commissioners in an attempt to prevent the
sale of his deceased father's house in
Gering for back taxes. He filed a motion
seeking to join the Star-Herald as a
defendant after the newspaper published a
story questioning the authenticity of
evidence presented in the case.
