the joint conference at WcsleyaiTs Fine Arts BIdg.
This year's theme is the law. Twenty workshops during
the two-day period will explore the relationship between
law and social work, Coyne said.
"Social workers need to become more aware of the law
and the legal process, she said, 'because many social
problems can be helped by the law."
For example, Coyne said, Nebraska law allows the st3te
to take a child away from his parents if there is evidence
of child abuse, one of what she called the social problems.
The workshops, each chaired by a lawyer and a social
worker, will feature speakers discussing potential pro
blems and help for social workers, she said.

said. The case revolved around Gov. J. James Exon's
wanting more persons allowed into the Beatrice State
Home. As a result of an out of court settlement, the
home's population decreased from IJDOO to 250 and
allowed more of the home's residents to move out into
the community.
Mason also was the legal adviser for the Human Rights
committee of Nebraska Association of Retarded Citizens
from 1972 through 1974.
Other workshop topics are: abortion, students rights,
child abuse, consumer rip-offs, the right to treatment, eu
thanasia, the privacy act and the rights of tenants and
landlord.
Coyne said the public conference has a reduced student
rate, $7 for both days. Rate for nonstudents are $25 for
both days of $ 15 for one day. Anyone wishing to register
may do so at the conference Thursday morning.
