    Bicentennial teaching methods
emphasize future and past
The N meaning of the
Bicentennial is as much in the
past as in the future, according
to William Sesow, director of a
summer workshop concerning
America's 200th birthday.
"Nebraska at Two Hundred
Years" is for elementary and
secondary school teachers to :
find ways of highlighting the"
Bicentennial in their
classrooms.
The workshop, from July
14, to Aug. 1, is being taught
by Sesow and Ruth Weatherl
of the Nebraska State
Department of Education.
East campus
gets trial

across the street to get books
this year instead of going
across town.
A branch of Nebraska
Bookstore will be opened on
35th and Holdrege streets Aug.
13 on a trial basis, said John
Wehr, Nebraska Bookstore

The store will be open for
three weeks in the fall and

to hold a series of seminars in
the Grand Island-Kearney
Hastings area.
He Indicated that Prof.
George C. Holdren of the.

The workshop grew out of
experience Weatherl had
preparing Bicentennial
materials for Nebraska
Education Service Units which
provide education extras for
students in Nebraska's smaller
school districts.
Nebraska information
Sesow said materials and
information about Nebraska
are being emphasized and
"extensive use of local outside
speakers has been made.
"What happened at
Lexington and Concord is
book store
this fail
location, Wehr said.
Legitimate need
"We have talked about
doing this for many years and
think that the students out
there have a legitimate need for
a more convenient store," he
said.
The store will carry books
for agriculture, home
economics and law. In
addition, some basic freshman
course books will be available
along with some reference
books and school supplies.

meaningful but is isn't
meaningful to the people who
weren't there. To be
meaningful we must look at
the now-what we are like
today and as we look into the
past, project into the future,"
he said."
"There is heavy emphasis on
the local environment as
opposed tp Boston, Mass.",
which very few children have a
conception of what it is like."
Sesow said the workshop
encourages teachers to " get
away from the history-book
approach and focus on the
present and future.
Inquiry approach
"It's definitely an inquiry
approach," he said. .
He said there was value in
letting the child see how he or
she fits into the spirit of the
United States.
"It's his birthday too,"
Sesow said.
Sesow said he is pleased
with the efforts of the teachers
in his class who have made use
of many outside resources,
including the library, the,
bookstores and the state
Bicentennial headquarters.
' "They've been trying to
search out and pull things
together using a sophisticated,
scholarly approach," he said.
