    Yule cheer for brownies, bread
Price conscious students may find the
holidays approaching with a sense of
doom rather than Christmas cheer. The
end of the semester means the end of
money for most. Thus, limited budgets
must be stretched to give presents to
deserving friends. Toothpicks offers one
alternative to help alleviate some of your
financial difficulties.

We propose a variety of traditional
holiday goodies to be given as gifts.
They can be made ahead of time and
frozen before the crunch of finals and
term papers overtakes you. Banana nut
bread, fudge and brownies are the
recipes included here for Christmas gift
giving.
BANANA NUT BREAD
2 c. sifted flour
2 t. baking powder
1 t. salt
V'2 t. soda
1 0. sugar
V2 c. shortening
2 eggs
1 c. mashed bananas (preferably ones that are
overripe)
1 t. lemon juice
1 c. chopped nuts
iitt all of the dry ingredients together. Add
shortening, eggs, banana's and lemorTjuice. Beat
two minutes with an electric mixer. Stir in the
nuts and pour into a greased loaf pan. Bake 1
hour and 15 minutes at 350 degrees. Yield: 1 loaf.
EASY FUDGE
2 c. sugar
2T. Butter or oleo
1 small can evaporated milk
1 t. vanilla
1 6-oz. pkg. choclate chips
Vz c. nuts
Combine sugar and evaporated milk. Bring to a
boil and boil exactly six minutes. Remove from
fire and add remaining ingredients. Beat with a
mixer until it begins to thicken. Pour into a
buttered pan. Cut when cool into squares. Make
about 1 Vz lbs.
FUDGE BROWNIES
4 eggs
2 c. sugar
1 c. butter
4 T. cocoa
2 c. flour
1 c. nuts
2 tsp. vanilla
Beat eggs and add sugar. Melt butter and add
to egg mixture. ,Add flour, cocoa, nuts and
flavoring. Bake in a shallow pan about 25 minutes
in 325 degree oven.
Hopefully these gift ideas will prove
useful in spreading Christmas cheer. If
the cost of sugar is prohibitive (and it
probably is if you are like most students)
use honey as a substitute in the banana
nut bread. Nutritional value can be
bolstered by using whole wheat flour
wherever the recipe specifies flour.
Duo to
mime and
pantomime
r
Sophie Wibaux and Bert Houle, better known as
the Loretto-Hilton Mime Troupe, will perform
Friday nignt at 8 p.m. in Kimball Recital Hall as
part of the UNL Performing Arts Series.
, The , two mimes studied under the tutelage of
"the father of modern mime," Etienne Decroux
(the teacher of Marcel Marceau), and afterwards
formed a partnership which has taken them
around Europe and throughout the United States.
Their performance here is part of a second tour
through the Midwest sponsored by the Mid
America Arts Alliance.
Both experts in their art, the duo will perform
both pantomime and mime, the difference being
that pantomime plays for comic effect and deals
with images of real objects while mime has more
ties with modern dance, relying on abstract moves
and images as well as a distinctly lyrical approach
to motion.
Single admission tickets are available at $4;
students, $2.50. Ail seats are reserved, with
tickets available at the Kimball box office.
