The key to student
development is transla
tion, the new, Dean of
Student Development told
the Daily Nebraskan.
Ely Meyerson said stu
dents must be able to
translated divisin titles
into tools for themselves. '
"Placement," "Stu
dent Activities, and
"Counseling Center"- di
visions exist to help stu
dents in their out-of-class
needs, he said.
. To mako them work,
thefr offerings must be
visibfe and accessible to
students.
"There's so much there,
a heck of a lot more than it
appears," he said.
For example, Scholar
ships and Financial Aids
is part of his new duties.
That office will be es
pecially important to out
state students whose par
ents, through the summer
drought, lost money in-
tended for school costs, he
said.
The Counseling Center
offers seminars, informa
tion and friendly counsel
ing for any student's
problems, he said.
Meyerson became Dean
of Student Development
after confimation by the
NU Board of Regents at its
July meeting. He wil
administrate the depart
ment's budget.
Meyerson replaces Act
ing Director Hal Smith.
Smith will be associate
dean in charge of Student
Activities, Conduct Refer
rals and special projects.
Meyerson will be direct
ly respnsible for Place
ment, the Counseling
Center, Scholarships - and
Financial Aids, Recrea
tion, Fraternities, .Sorori
ties and Cooperatives, and
the International Student
Office.
Student Activities, Rec
reation and the Counsel
ing Center are financed
with student fees. The
others are financed with
tax money or special
grants.
Meyerson said his posi
tion is a new one created
by joining two co-direct-tors,
one for programs and
one for services.
Smith directed pro
grams. Harry Cannon,
now vice president of
student affairs at North
ern Illinois University, di
rected services.
Meyerson said the de
partment combined the
positions because it ap
peared the move would
cave money and increase
coordination of work.
Meyerson had been
dean of adminstration for
Kenneth Bader, vice chan
cellor of student affairs for
UNL.
