Ely Meyerson said stu dents must be able to translated divisin titles into tools for themselves. ' "Placement," "Stu dent Activities, and "Counseling Center"- di visions exist to help stu dents in their out-of-class needs, he said. . To mako them work, thefr offerings must be visibfe and accessible to students. "There's so much there, a heck of a lot more than it appears," he said. For example, Scholar ships and Financial Aids is part of his new duties. That office will be es pecially important to out state students whose par ents, through the summer drought, lost money in- tended for school costs, he said. The Counseling Center offers seminars, informa tion and friendly counsel ing for any student's problems, he said. Meyerson became Dean of Student Development after confimation by the NU Board of Regents at its July meeting. He wil administrate the depart ment's budget. Meyerson replaces Act ing Director Hal Smith. Smith will be associate dean in charge of Student Activities, Conduct Refer rals and special projects. Meyerson will be direct ly respnsible for Place ment, the Counseling Center, Scholarships - and Financial Aids, Recrea tion, Fraternities, .Sorori ties and Cooperatives, and the International Student Office. Student Activities, Rec reation and the Counsel ing Center are financed with student fees. The others are financed with tax money or special grants. Meyerson said his posi tion is a new one created by joining two co-direct-tors, one for programs and one for services. Smith directed pro grams. Harry Cannon, now vice president of student affairs at North ern Illinois University, di rected services. Meyerson said the de partment combined the positions because it ap peared the move would cave money and increase coordination of work. Meyerson had been dean of adminstration for Kenneth Bader, vice chan cellor of student affairs for UNL.
