Devaney names
Myles to grid staff
One of the leading high school coaches in
the Kansas City area has been added to the
Nebraska football coaching staff, subject to
approval by the Board of Regents.
Bill Myles will replace Bill Thornton, who
resigned recently to become backf ield coach
for the St. Louis Cardinals of the National
Football League. Myles, a graduate of Drake
University who holds a masters degree, has
coached 10 seasons in Kansas City.
"Bill has a great coaching record and he's
a fine man," Husker Football Coach Bob
Devaney said. "We're happy to find a coach
of his ability and record to follow Bill
Thornton."
Devaney said Myles will assist Jim Ross
with the 1972 freshman team. Jim WakJen,
who assisted Ross with the freshman
program last season, will advance to the
varsity to coach the defensive ends, the
assignment Thornton had in 1971 .

tennis scholarship
Corn Cobs, UNL men's spirit
organization, has established a memorial
scholarship in honor of Bob Duffek, a
22-year-old UNL tennis player who died last
month after a two-year battle against cancer.
Gary Kuklin, Corn Cobs president, said
the annual $150 memorial scholarship will
go to a varsity tennis player.
"We normally give a scholarship to a
minor sport," Kuklin said. "Bob's death was
tragic and since he was an outstanding tennis
player we thought we would honor him."
Duffek graduated from Lincoln Southeast
High School where he lettered in tennis
before going on to earn two letters at UNL.
He was a member of Delta Sigma Pi
fraternity and served as a tennis instructor at
the Lincoln Country Club.
