responsibility to teach, prac

ples of Judo.
Judo is known as an art of
combat, but the real value of
judo as applied to everyday
life is in the principles and
nature of its training. The
training is in the form of
competetive sport, designed
to develop and cultivate the
skill and powers inherent in
man.
A man in judo trains to de
velop poise, confidence, re
straint, .and gentleness, to
gether with coordination and
agility.
A contest in judo is not an
end, but a part and means of
training as well as a test of
skill. It is called Shiai or trial
match. A match usually lasts
five minutes or until a point
is scored. A point is awarded
for a clean throw or an ef
fective choke or a hold for 30
seconds. If there is no decid
ing point scored the referee
may award a decision.
