Monday, Oct. 10, I960 The Nebraskan Page 3 .Nebraska's1 Fourth String Halfback Scores Two Touchdowns in 1960 Debut By Hal Brown Bennie Dillard, an almost forgotten halfback, furnished the spark Saturday to revive Nebraska s jnoffensive of ' fense as the Buskers took a 17-7 Big Eight win over Kan sas State. Dillard, who hasn't e,v e n been listed on the three-deep roster this fall, entered the game midway in the third quarter with the score tied, 0-0 and skirted right end for 34 yards before being knocked out of bounds at the Kansas State 22. After four plays netted only two yards, Ron Meade booted a 37-yard field goal to give Nebraska a 3-0 lead with 11:45 gone in the third quarter Meade had missed a third' down field goal attempt from the Kansas State 47-yard line with 30 seconds remaining in the first half. Two minutes after Meade's field goal gave Nebraska the lead Dillard was again ush ered into the game and again the 162-pound halfback swept right end. This time it was for only four yards, but it was a touchdown and when Meade added the extra point, Nebraska had a 10-0 lead as the third quarter ended. The first Husker touchdown was set up when with a fourth and ten situation on their own 30-yard line, Kan sas State's Ron Blaylock Huskers Lose Cross Country Meet to K-Sfate Kansas State defeated Ne braska's cross country run ners 21-36. in the first meet for both teams Saturday morning. , Wildcat Ed Wagner led the field home over the three-mile hill-and-dale course at Pio neers Park. Meade's extra point kick was good and the final score stood 17-7 in favor of Nebraska. ' The first half was marred by numerous fumbles and pass interceptions as the 38, 000 Band Day spectators must have wondered if they had come to the right place as the Huskers lost two fumbles and had one pass intercepted while Kansas State lost one fumble and had one pass pirated. Kansas State led the first half statistics with 40 total yards to 39 for the Huskers. The Wildcats led the Huskers in rushing, 32-21, but Nebras ka led in passing, yardage with 18 yards to eight for the Wildcats, Kansas State had two gol den opportunities to scor,e in the first quarter. The first came when the Wildcats broke through to block an Archie Cobb punt and take over on the Nebraska 30. The tough Husker defense rose to the occasion, however, and the Wildcats were -able to gain only 14 yards on nine plays as the Huskers took over on the 16-yard line. On the first play after tak ing over, Nebraska's Fischer threw a pitchout that landed at the feet of Bernie Clay and Kansas State's Darrell Elder fell on the ball at the eight-yard line. Thornton stopped- this threat by Intercepting a Blay lock pass on the four-yard line. The entire first quarter was played on the Nebraska side of the midfield stripe ex cept for four plays. The clos est the ball got to the Kansas State goal in the first" period was the Wildcat 42-yard line. Nebraska's first threat was stopped by a fumble in the second quarter. Kansas State's Jack Richardson fumbled on the Wildcat 21 and Fischer recovered for Ne braska on the 24. Fischer IMGrid Slate Monday: City Fields NE Delta Sigma Pi vs. Sigma Alpha Mu. "Nebraska has better pur suit and is a more aggressive club than Colorado. Nebraska compares favorable to Colo rado in the line," said Wildcat line coach John Kadlec after viewing the Kansas State Nebraska game from the press box. "Nebraska is good and tough. They have fine running backs and a good solid ball club. They are able to beat any team in the league," he added. "Nebraska has more hitters than Colorado, but they aren't quite up to Kansas because Kansas has a great ball club and great speed," said back field coach Bob Hailey. Hailey coached from the bench and Kadlec handled the phone from the press box with Doug Weaver unable to make, the trip because of back trouble. Kansas defeated the Wildcats, 41-0, and Colorado tripped Kansas State, 27-7. "Nebraska is as good as Colorado, but Kansas is a lit tle better than the Huskers," Jack Richardson, K a n s a i State left halfback said. "Ne braska's line is big but not quite as quick as Kansas.'"
